Default VEP test anyone?

Did anyone have this test in the process of ms dx? I believe it is called Visual Provoked Potential test. It measures brain waves.

I had VEP's done. My neurologist wanted to rule out optic nerve involvement. Tests were normal except for some thinning of the retina in both eyes, but no optic neuritis . . .

I've have had this test done several times. The results indicate I have damage to my optic nerves caused by optic neuritis, one of the symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis.

Was there something specific you would like to know?

I had VEP done, and it came out normal while not in a flare, and truly abnormal while in the next flare, and abnormal after that flare. I hate this disease.

If some of you were normal on VEP test (and have MS), then it must not be an accurate diagnostic test for MS. I have not been formally dx'd yet.

Is this test only given if Optic Neuritis is suspected? I realize some people do not have Optic Neuritis as a presenting symptom of MS.

I thought this test was also given to measure brain activity, not just vision problems?.........

I may be wrong, and I often am, but it's my belief that a VEP is an investigation to confirm optic neuritis, and not a test specifically for brain wave activity.

An EEG, or electro-encephalograph, is a test which does show brain wave activity, and was used as one of the tests to confirm my own diagnosis.

is the one to confirm ms dx. not the VEP, sounds like VEP is specific only to optic neuritis, but EEG is an overall dx measure for ms.....

Tx for infor.

I have had both tests. The EEG was looking for seizures, it measures brain waves. The VEP was (from what I was told) to look for damage from Optic Neuritis. That one for me was slightly abnormal and I was not in a flare when it was done.

It is not a direct way to diagnose MS, but there really isn't one. But they are probably trying to find all of the info they can and compile it all together. With all the information of what they have found and what they have ruled out they can possibly confirm the MS.

I hope this helps.
