welcome andy! I live in NH and we too are surrounded by deer flies, sweltering heat, black flies, and all that goes with this short summer season. Dont worry, the snow will be back soon.

What happens now?

I have recently had a crisis and my GP tried to contact my neurologist for help in managing my symptoms. I am as yet undiagnosed. In the abscence of any help he gave me a massive steroid injection which has now transformed my life. However this now looks as if this has put back any diagnosis as the neurology unit at hospital would not admit me as I was OK. How on earth do I cope with this?

Hi James! welcome to the club house. Dont worry we wont offer you a key just yet, but what you need to know that IF and its a huge IF you have MS its not a disease that folks walk thru the door, the MD says "you have MS" and they go home. Its a process. so, lets talk!

First there are greater than 100 disease that can mimic MS including the lesions in the brain. Your MD will rule out the easy ones such as Vit D or B12 being low. Lyme, lupus, sjoghrens and so forth can show up on a blood test. They will want on MRI and will look to see IF you have any lesions. If so, where are they? what pattern are they in? What area do they live in? Please know that normal adults can carry lesions for no good reason, or things such as stress, migraines, and so on. DONT panic if you have lesions in your head.

After your MD get thru about 95 of those disease (most if not all of those can be proven or disproven by blood, urine, MRI, CTscan, and so forth. Once we hit that point of being left with a small handful and no answers they then will pick the one that closely matches YOUR symptoms. By the way MY MS may be way different from YOUR MS. I may have visual trouble, memory problem, headaches, and have a buzzy foot. You may have numb feet, unsteady walking, and not able to balance well. It runs the whole gammit.

PLEASE if you know nothing else, know that its RARE for us to end up in a wheel chair or to need full time care givers. greater than 90% of us live on our own, take care of our own needs, and while we are sick, we can reach the land of stable for long periods of time.

Let us know what happens.

hi james and welcome to NT.
at least you're feeling better. whenever your next sx's (symptoms) start try again.

or, look for another neuro. that's the stupidiest thing i've ever heard.
at least they can see you and do a physical exam, get your foot in the door. especially with your pcp referral.

don't give up. you're your own best advocate.

Hi

Hi I'm here because I was diagnosed with MS yesterday. I had mono 8 years ago and have experienced headaches ever since. I developed optic neuritis a few weeks back and after an MRI was told it' MS. Not real sure how I feel about it and just looking for some answers.

Dejibo 07-08-2012 07:32 AM

welcome joshua! pull up a chair, get reading! TONS of information here as well as MS.org and tons of good people to answer your questions or plenty of room to make comments.

Sorry for your diagnosis, but I guess you are in the club house now. Kitty will teach you the secret hand shake.
