Default Neuro appt tomorrow and conversation with DH

So tomorrow I go to see the neuro in the suburbs and it's a six hour event because it's a 90 minute drive or more each way with rush hour traffic. DH doesn't like to drive me and I can drive myself but it's getting to be a real inconvenience, expecially since my MS is so mild the past few years.

So I mentioned I'm going to ask him to refer me to a local neuro and if I have problems can I come back to him? And DH says, "so do you really think you have MS? I mean, you've been doing so good for the past few years, maybe you don't really have it?"

I know why he said it, but it still hurt some because I really suffered in the beginning when my symptoms were so bad. So I joked a bit with him and then said I think his knee pain before his knee replacement must have been all in his head and the doctor did a fake surgery just to get his money. Then I told him how friends of mine had stopped meds and had relapses thinking they'd never had MS. Then he said maybe I should keep taking my meds because we wouldn't want me to get worse. MEN.

Mine did the same thing in the early days. I said "what do YOU think MS is?" and he talked about Richard Pryor and Annette Funicello and others who are wheel chair bound and need helpers. He said he worried that within a few years I would need a chair and help to wipe myself. I made it my mission to educate him. Now he understands, but in the early days he really didnt get it.

I too have a local and a long distance neuro. The long distance folks are for trouble. the local guy is for normal checks. I just dont want to travel 2 hours in one direction to have someone say "ok, see ya in 6 months" The local guy is just fine. Good thinking!

Your husband's comment sounded hopeful as opposed to critical, however it would still push my hurt button.

wiz - make sure you bring iPad/iPod with mri app I told you about. That way they can't say oh I have to view them on the pc is other room. Lesions pretty much speak for themselves.

And yes I too am considering neuro right around the corner vs 1hr drive x2 + 1hr wait cause he triple books and there's nothing more for me till somethng groundbreaking comes along.

Thumbs up

Ok, in the appointment I decided I'm not ready to switch doctors. There's a reason I drive that far.

I was talking about my weight gain over the past couple of years and asking if my AD would have contributed. He gave me samples for a new AD (which I'm not sure I'm going to try yet) and said I could try Adderall for fatigue which also helps control appetite.

So I took one Adderall this morning and my energy is back. Normally I spend all of my time off sitting around and I've been productive today. So if it helps with my appetite too and I lose a couple of pounds it will be a win-win situation. I'd never considered it before because I take a blood pressure pill, but he reminded me that lack of exercise and weight gain can make it go up too.

So I'm going to watch my BP and see if this works. That guy is a keeper!

Glad to hear he listened, Wiz, and was proactive...all I hear when I see him is exercise and eat right...never mind about the fatigue...blah blah blah...

and Eddie, our neuro (Wiz & I see the same guy) shows us the mris on the computer in the office, goes over it slice by slice at times with me, anyway.

Still, I just wish he didn't talk so much, Wiz...honestly it drives me insane...

LOL, Debbie, so many people wish their neuro talked more!

Glad your visit was productive, Wiz!

I'm glad you like your neuro and have decided to stay with him! I drive to my MS Specialist and also my mutt's vet. It is worth it.

Your post made me wonder if my DH believes I actually have MS. He surely ignores the fact that I have it and refuses to consider that it will progress. I do believe it is like Blessings said that he is hopeful or imo in denial and not that he is being inconsiderate.
