Hi April!

I can't give you any definite answers about your negative spinal tap because I've never had one. My diagnosis was made by MRI and symptoms.

Lots of luck to you!

Nope, not me, April. Mine was possitive for protein. I had a Myeliogram. Thats what they did, in the old days, before MRIs.

I have heard from others though, that their LP didnt show anything, and yet was DX by other tests. Some Docs want a whole battery of tests before they will DX MS and some will do it with one.

If you get a DX with an MRI and/or other means, an LP is an unnecessary danger and discomfort.

I was diagnosed without a spinal tap. But a later spinal tap did come out positive. It was done somewhat later just as part of a confirmatory process that my doc was doing as he reviewed older files and he asked if I'd agree to it so I did.

You are a much nicer person than I would have been. Knowing what I know now, I would have punched him right in the nose and then asked him why he wanted me to suffer thru an unneeded test.

I'm right there with ya Sally

I had both the LP and Myelogram however the MRI was just starting to be used so I did have a brain MRI without contrast but not a c-spine MRI.

April,

I was dx'd based on a positive LP, neuro exam and symptoms.

There are many that get a diagnosis of MS without having an LP or a negative LP.

Actually, it wasn't so bad Sally. Didn't feel any worse than an injection really (well, except he hit a nerve and I had a few "zings" down one buttock but even that wasn't that bad).

But it really wasn't bad at all. And I'm not the bravest person in the world either so if it would have been bad, I would have been hollering sweet mary!

Default Neg LP

I was Dx with neg LP. I had MRI and variety of symptoms. I have questioned it ever since then. I have seen other Neuros who do all seem to agree that I have MS, but I can't help but question it!!! I am on Betaferon, better to be safe than sorry!

my lp was negative when i first dxd with ms. i think that means there were not yet any spinal lesions. the radioligist who did my first lp showed me the liquid he withdrew from my spine. it was clear. he said that that was a good thing - that my ms wasn't progressing "downward".

having ms with a "negaitve" lp is definitely a good thing.
