Default I have an issue with noise

I realize this is probably due to anxiety but I have become nearly intolerant of noise. I teach first grade and I used to be patient and kind. Well, I still try to be, but I find that noise almost makes me angry or sort of insane! If several try to talk to me at once which happens daily (heck, probably every five minutes) it REALLY irritates me. Also, other things. One of the teachers that I have lunch with (whom is terrific), has a really loud voice and likes to use it. I adore her but can barely stand to sit near her. Then, there are things like when my children turn up the music, or the TV goes on one of those extra loud commercials. So, anxiety I suppose, but curious if others have this issue?

I've become very "noise intolerant", too. I sit with the TV remote in hand and mute the television often. Things that didn't use to bother me really do now.

Screaming people (game shows are the worst) are just like fingernails on a blackboard to me. There are a couple of commercials that I just can't listen to.

The grocery store is also a hot zone for loudness. I don't know if it's the MS or just me getting older (I'm only 52 so I doubt that's it) but noise just seems to really bother me now. I avoid loud people if possible. Sometimes it's just not feasible, though.

I have fibro, not MS, but simply can't stand noise. Sometimes the crickets can make me crazy.

It has to do with nerves in the CNS, that applies to both problems. Not much to do about it, I was a school bus driver. The only way I could escape was to retire.

Maybe, with the children, you could make a game of keeping their noise level down. Calmly explain to the class that when they make noise it affects you like...oh, pick something childish. Ok, the noise affects you like banging on Oscar the Grouch's trash can. Tell them that when they get noisy you will do a certain thing, like clap your hands. Whoever helps quiet the rest gets...a gold star on a poster. Kids like such competition.

I'm sorry noise bothers you so. It has only affects me a time or 2. The most interesting was in the kitchen one time. There were a number of people there; must have been a holiday. I heard what I thought was a gunshot and ducked and covered my ears. I looked around and no one else was affected. I asked what that noise noise was and got "What noise? Dad's sneeze?"

Most people have filters that subconsciously filter out the unneeded and unwanted input to their brains. With MS those filters are compromised so everything gets through. So we are barraged with sensory input with no way to filter it.

intolerance to noise is an annoying part of MS for me.
When we're at a social gathering, I have to excuse myself and go home.

My suggestion, which I am going to use from now on is to either use earplugs or cotton to lessen the impact on the hearing. I wear earplugs for women "Pretty in Pink" that fit my smaller ear canal when I sleep.

See if doing something along these lines helps a bit..

I have had open brain surgery, for an aneurysm, and for me, also having MS, sensory overload - whether it was noise, lots of movement, colour, or iinformation just about caused me to shut down completely and curl up in the foetal position.

It is still that way to quite some degree - mostly from MS and information overload. Only now I am aware of what is going on - and I take all measures I can to prevent it. I don't shop when I am tired (if I can avoid it - shopping centres undo me, with all the people moving, the products and bright merchandising), if I am feeling unwell, I totally avoid crowded areas.

I teach older people - teenagers and adults, but my friends who teach kids say that you should try talking to them only in 'stage whispers' - they will have to concentrate harder to hear what you are saying (and kids hate to think they are missing out on anything - especially if it is a secret) - I can't guarantee it, but it might be worth a try???? I know that if your tone and volume go up, so will theirs.
