Default Gabapentin and Med Interaction

Has anyone who takes Gabapentin had the problem of it interacting poorly with other symptom meds you're taking?

I was put on Gabapentin but already taking Baclofen at the time. After adding Gabapentin to the mix I started having very noticeable reactions to the combo. I couldn't get a full sentence out with out sounding like I'd been on a drinking binge. It made me absolutely stupid. And after I had embarrassed myself with the attempted talking I would promptly fall asleep. I even purposely took the dreaded combo in front of my kids and sister just so I'd have proof this really was happening and I wasn't losing my mind. Sure enough it happened and they all told me what they had witnessed.

I immediately came off the Gabapentin and have not had a problem since. Has anyone else had issues with taking Gabapentin in combination with other symptom meds and what were your issues? Did you find any other med to take?

As far as I can see there is a known "Moderate" interaction between Gabapentin and Baclofen which sounds like what you have experienced.

Default gabapentin

my doctor tried to switch me from lyrica to gabapentin; and i had burning sensations through out my body ......my doctor had switched me back to lyrica and the burning stopped.....i later read somewhere on the internet that gabapentin commonly causes burning in females over 60, who also have m.s......at that time i was also taking tramadol, which i no longer use

Baclofen and gabapentin was causing severe drops in my blood sugar levels, which already run a little bit low to begin with but was stuck with the two for about two weeks and living on a diet of devil dogs and marshmallows (okay ate real food too, but at least once ever hour when awake I had to stuff myself with sugar) pulse raced, blood pressure plummeted and yeah felt a bit like I had been on a massive drinking binge. Uncoordinated, slurred speech, and according to DH and fam weird speeches at time of randomness, at least until mind cleared enough to realize what was going on and start taking in sugar.

I come from a family of hypoglycemics, so was a little easier to pick up on for me, and what to do for it. But does sound like it is time for either an alternative to gabapentin or a different muscle relaxer which if it’s not a pump like mine, is easier to find. I had decent results from tizanadine (zanaflex) and metaxalone (skelaxin) robaxin wasn’t too bad either but my muscles got used to it really quickly. For a gabapentin swap only know of anti-depressants like cymbalta or lorazepam but they come with risk for addiction and a few other complications, that really shouldn’t change by swapping the relaxant instead.

Kitty, nobody knows your body like you, you know. The doctor doesn't. You know when something is wrong.

I'm taking gabapentin 300 mg 3x daily, I take baclofen 20 mg on the same schedule, both for pain. I have noticed a lot of stupid things come out of my mouth but I figured it was just my MS.

I really need these meds to manage my pain. I have tramadol for really bad days.

I just finished up 8 weeks of physical therapy for my pain in my back and legs. They thought it was spinal stenosis in my lumbar, and also sciatica in both legs. They did an MRI on Monday because now they suspect a herniated disk.

The PT helped strengthen my back some but the pain keeps returning. I see the physiatrist on the 13th to go over the MRI results. My neurologist thinks I should avoid back surgery so we'll see what happens and what they find.

Good luck wiz... I have a bulging herniated disk in my lumbar along with some bulging disks in my thoracic spine and necks ... never fun and the doctors basically told me no way at all for surgerical correction of any of them unless I’m paralyzed and they can no longer make it worse. So will keep my fingers crossed for you that your doctors are able to do something.

Well that's just terrible. I wish that surgery could be a viable fix for things like this. I still don't know for sure what my problem is but I find out on the 13th. I spend my days sitting on my heating pad and memory foam pillows. We went on vacation last month and all I could think of was getting home to my cushions and heating pads.
