ms plant expert...
i have a question. i have a wax plant that is an off shoot from my grandmother's plant. she passed away before i was 1...so...over 40 years ago. i have never gotten my plant to flower. hubby has "helped" and over watered it a few times. it's really not looking well. it's still pretty green, but it's not full like it used to be and only has one long shoot hanging down. any tips?

First let's make sure we are talking about the same plant. A lot of times, common names differ from one part of the country to the other. Here are some pictures of what I know to be a wax plant.

Here's another one...and a tip on making it all better!
Hoya carnosa can be propagated at anytime by air layering or by stem cuttings. A portion of the stem including one or more pairs of leaves will quickly produce roots in water or damp sand. Let it dry out during the winter months. Fertilize every 2 months in spring and summer. Do not remove the leafless spurs or stubs, on which new flowers appear every year. I recommend a well balanced fertilizer such as Miracle Gro - find the one for succulents. If you cannot find one, the all purpose one works just fine. Make sure to let the dirt dry out inbetween waterings.

Repot it. Make sure you have real dirt and not potting soil which is sometimes made up of half organic and non-organic material.
They also like to be root bound. Put it in a little pot!

i have a new pot. it's smaller. since some of the plant has died, that should work.
it looks like it has more potting soil than dirt. i'll fix that. ty cheryl. it would break my heart to lose that plant.

Good luck with it! I hope it lives too! Take a cutting off it and start a new one. Do you need more instructions on how to do that?
