I ran across this on another forum and posted it on a thread here (someone was asking about whether swimming is a good exercise for us).

Well written article Poolwatcher! Excellent points. I took a swimming class a couple of years ago to improve my strokes and loved it. I think it's time to get back to it!

Thanks for this article Barbara!! I've been working on my father and my fiance about my getting a pool. Both of them are hesitant, and I understand their doubts and concerns. I would not get a swimming pool if it was going to be such a source of concern for them, but that article has helped them see swimming from my point of view. Thank You again!!

What an inspiring article!! Well written,and very informative.I love the pics of your pool. A pool has always been on the top of my wish list. I love to swim, and have been using our local rehab pool for exercises. But I would really love to have a place to lap swim. Your article makes me want to be more proactive with my MS. Thanks!!

To find a closer pool, try www.findapool.com
If you only have a non-lap pool to swim in, try "Swim Cords". They are like a bungee cord: attach one end of the cord to one of your ankles (its a loop) and the other end to a stationary fixture like the pool ladder. This will allow you to swim in place, and yet, you feel like you are actually moving through water. I used it at a very small hotel pool and it was terrific! I hope to inspire other folks with MS and chronic illnesses to take ahold of their wellness and get in the pool. Even if you cannot move, did you know that just sitting in the pool lowers blood pressure? If you cannot swim, you might be able to sit there and do stretching in the pool. Before long you might find you can move better. What happens in diseases like MS is that it becomes harder or painful to move, so we stop moving as much which then atrophies our muscles and makes it even harder to move and with the atrophy our balance worsens. |
