Default Adult Stem Cells

There was a report on our local news yesterday about adult stem cells being used for illness like MS. While I usually zone out during the news, this peaked my interest.

They interviewed a guy who had been dx in 1995, his leg had been numb and he was losing his vision. Five years ago he had 5 days worth of chemo therapy to completely destroy his immune cells and then his own stem cells were harvested from his own blood or bone marrow and used to rebuild his immune system. He has had 5 years without symptoms and doesn't take any DMDs. Has anyone heard of this?

here is a link to the site where you can watch the video. I hope this works. Just curious if anyone knows anything about this.

I had not known that stem cells were specifically used for MS. I had know that it was in a subgrouping with Parkinson's as the lead disease testing. It sure is good to hear that MS is being specifically targeted.

Thanks for sharing. I used to live out there and it was great to see my fav news doctors again.

There was a trial going on in Canada for this a few years ago, and the procedure was grueling to say the least. The good news is that those people who did it (and lived to tell about it, one died), are all doing really, really well.

Here's a recent update, which starts off with information about another drug trial:

Default X-Cell Stem Cell treatment

In Germany there are doing Stem Cell treatment. It costs about $10k (US). I spoke to someone there, as I have been looking into it. I think he said they worked with 50 MS patients in 2007 (don't quote me - I think the number was 50, but I could be wrong....sometimes I feel lucky to remember my name these days).

http://www.xcell-center.com

I think for the younger ones of us dx with MS - there is a lot more hope than there was years ago - I think stem cells and so many other things are on the horizon...and they will find a cure or a treatment to stop the disease for good one day. Hopefully in my lifetime...but if not for me, than for the next generation.

There are some other places in Europe doing the same type of stem cell treatment that X-Cell is doing as well.

I definitely looks like promising stuff for our future....
