Hi all,

I wrote to my legislators today and I thought I'd share with others how to do that. This is an easy thing to do to promote MS awareness, and it can be quite effective!

Put in your zip code in the upper right hand side. It will give you a list of all your legislators, and you can email each of them.

I sent the following email this morning to all of them.

Dear [Legislator],

I have Multiple Sclerosis, a disease that stops some of the most productive citizens from working hard to build and/or support businesses and communities. This devastating disease most often strikes in the prime of the lives of its victims.

As your constituent and an educational advocacy volunteer with the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, I'd like to ask for your support of increased federal investment in multiple sclerosis research.

We are requesting a $15 million appropriation to the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) in the FY 2009 Defense Appropriation to fund research for MS.

During March, we are raising MS awareness and working with other MS organizations to move research forward. Now is the perfect time to show your support for services and research that benefit people living with multiple sclerosis.

Preliminary evidence suggests that Gulf War veterans could have an increased risk of developing MS. Additionally:

A recent study in the Annals of Neurology identified 5,345 cases of MS among U.S. veterans that were deemed "service-connected."
An epidemiological study found an unexpected, two-fold increase in MS between 1993 and 2000 in Kuwait, which suggests an environmental trigger for MS.
A 2004 report from a study group commissioned by the VA suggests more research must be done on the potential link between MS and combat service.

More funding is necessary to explore the possibility that something in the environment could trigger this disease among veterans and other Americans. The Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, The Consortium of MS Centers, The Heuga Center, the International Organization of MS Nurses, the Montel Williams MS Foundation, MSFriends, and the National MS Society make this ask together.
