Curious, I don't have my LP results any longer. Way too many years ago but a positive LP (meaning possibly MS) requires oligoclonal bands (o-bands) which will usually mean the patient has high protien (IGg - if I have that correct).

LPs are not just to diagnose MS. There are other diseases where you can have an abnormal LP.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/003631.htm
CSF oligoclonal banding is a test to look for inflammation-related substances in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), the clear fluid that flows in the space surrounding the spinal cord and brain.
Oligoclonal bands are substances called immunoglobulins, which suggest inflammation of the central nervous system. The presence of oligoclonal bands may be a sign of multiple sclerosis.

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/e...cle/003428.htm
Normal values vary from lab to lab but typically range as follows:
  • Pressure: 50 - 180 mm H20
  • Appearance: clear, colorless
  • CSF total protein: 15 - 45 mg/100 mL
  • Gamma globulin: 3 - 12% of the total protein
  • CSF glucose: 50 - 80 mg/100 mL (or approximately 2/3 of blood sugar level)
  • CSF cell count: 0 - 5 white blood cells, no red blood cells
  • Chloride: 110 - 125 mEq per liter
Note: mg/mL = milligrams per milliliter; mEq/L = milliequivalent per

There were several different reports from my LP. Some of my results did take several weeks to come back and other results came back in a couple of days.

This was one of the reports and it took a couple of weeks to result:

CSF IgG Synthesis See Note -
Note
+9.2 mg/day
Reference Range: -9.9 TO +3.3

IgG in CSF 9.9 -
Reference range: 0.8 to 7.7

Unit: mg/dL
Albumin in CSF 42.6 -
Reference range: 8.0 to 42.0

Unit: mg/dL
Oligoclonal Bands BANDS NOTED -
Reference range: NO BANDS
Note
The patient's CSF contains 9 well defined gamma restriction bands
that are not present in the patient's corresponding serum sample.
These bands indicate abnormal synthesis of gammaglobulins in the
central nervous system. This finding is supportive evidence of
multiple sclerosis, but should be interpreted in conjunction with all
clinical and laboratory data pertaining to this patient.
The clinical significance of a numerical band count, determined by
isoelectric focusing, has not been definitively defined. The data
should be interpreted in conjunction with all pertinent clinical and
laboratory data for this patient.

IgG in Serum 1230 -
Reference range: 694 to 1618
Unit: mg/dL

CSF IgG Index 0.74 - H
Reference range: LESS THAN 0.66

Albumin,Serum 4.3 -
Reference range: 3.7 to 5.1
Unit: g/dL

Note
The IgG Synthesis rate, CSF and IgG index, CSF are two formulae for
estimating the amount of IgG produced in the central nervous system.
Evidence of increased synthesis of IgG provides support for the
diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

And then there were these results that went with each test tube. These results that came back quickly:

CSF Tube # 1 -

CSF Total Volume 0.5 - mL

CSF Color COLORLESS (CLLS)-

CSF Appearance CLEAR (CLER)-

CSF White Blood Cells 25 (0-5) /cumm H
20 MONONUCLEARS
5 POLYS

CSF Red Blood Cells 83 (0)- /cumm H

Hope this helps.

Oh, wait. I found more lab sheets. There were these reports too.

CSF Glucose 71 (40-70) mg/dL H

CSF Total Protein 63 (15-45) mg/dL H

VDRL, CSF NONREACTIVE -
Reference range: NONREACTIVE

I think that is everything.
