Default Lumbar Punture set for Thursday

Well my optomologist/neuro agreed to order the lumbar puncture. I'm nervous in the sense that I truly hope they find something. All of my MRIs done 2 weeks ago were normal. I just don't understand why things don't show up if I have MS or not. My left eye now will not move to the left therefore the double vision has gotten worse. After seeing the eye doctor last week he mentioned 6th nerve palsley??

Has anyone been diagnoised with MS with the MRIs being normal and having double vision as well?

How long does it take to get results from a lumbar punture?

And what am I to expect after the procedure?

Thanks everyone!

Good luck Patch. After your LP, stay flat for as long as you possibly can and drink a lot. My LP helped my dx a lot. I had abnormal MRIs but no symptoms (my MS was found accidentally) so the LP sealed the deal and allowed me to get treatment. Don't do what I did...I felt so good that I went to my Italian language class that evening and then went out for beers and dinner. Not a good choice!! I paid for it for the next two weeks. The longer you can stay flat, the better!

hi patch,

i agree with greta. drinking a lot (and caffeine helps) and laying flat will make you feel better. sometimes you can get a post LP headache. IF that happens call your dr right away. they do something called a blood patch (no pun intended ). the headache can be caused by leaking spinal fluid around the puncture site.

i'm sure they will help you thru the test and give you instructions.
be sure to drink a lot before the test too. staying hydrated helps them get enuf spinal fluid for the test.

i had a + LP that clinched my dx but i also had a + mri and an abnormal neuro exam.

i would look for the results to be done by 72hrs. however, it may take a wk for the dr's office to call you. if it's been 7 days you should call them.

good luck. my test went well with no side effects.
