My neurologist ordered an MRI and 4 spinal cord lesions were identified and one possible (but not likely) brain lesion. Due to this as well as my mother having MS, my doctor feels that it is likely that I have MS. He has now ordered a lumbar punture.

I remember having to take my mom to hers 10 years ago. She said it was completely excrutiating. Have there been any medical advances to make this more bearable? What should I expect during and after?

Thanks for everything.

I had one done in '11. The doctor numbed the area first. I recall it felt weird, feeling him drain the fluid that they tested for lesions with. And after, once home, I took a long nap. Felt a little nauseous.
After realizing this doctor was the same doctor who administered the epidural for my first born and spinal for my third born,(care of his remembering my tattoo ), I felt comfortable and confident that he knew what he was doing sticking a needle in my back. Trusting the doctor, helps.

Good Luck, hope it's not too bad for you.

My one and only lumbar puncture was pure torture. The guy kept hitting nerves causing shooting pain in my legs. I will never consent to another

I once had an epidural, that was like that, non-pregnancy related, but for another surgery I had. I believe that it was a student. I said, stop. I'll take the nausea that may result from the surgery, just stop.

Some people, just aren't born with the ability to administer needles of any kind.

Feel for you there, and others that have had issues around LP's and other procedures, similar

Lumbar Punctures are not the best feeling. The first time I needed one it took them 3 tries to get it. 2 in the ER by the doc who couldn't get it done right. Then I went in for a floro guided and it was done right that time. Its awkward uncomfortable. The last time I had one done it was completed by a doctor while a few intern nurses and residents watched. He was in, out, and done pretty fast. I don't think its a common enough procedure for too many docs to be good at it.
