Study: Red Wine Extract Makes Fat Mice Healthy Again

Thursday, November 02, 2006

WASHINGTON — Obese mice on a high-fat diet got the benefits of being thin — living healthier, longer lives — without the pain of dieting when they consumed huge doses of red wine extract, according to a landmark new study.

It's far too early to know if this would work in people, scientists said. But several were excited by the findings, calling it promising and even "spectacular."

The study by the Harvard Medical School and the National Institute on Aging shows that heavy doses of the red wine ingredient, resveratrol, lowers the rate of diabetes, liver problems and other fat-related ill effects in obese mice.

Fat-related deaths dropped 31 percent for obese mice on the supplement, compared to fat mice that got no treatment. The mice that got the wine extract also lived longer than expected, the study showed.

And astoundingly, the organs of the treated fat mice looked normal when they shouldn't have, said study lead author Dr. David Sinclair of Harvard Medical School.

I understand the amount of red wine extract that they gave the mice would be equivalent to humans drinking 100 bottles of wine a day. I don't think I could do that on my best/worse day.

Oh come on, UNDX Craig, let's just pretend we're in college on a friday nite... we could probably do some serious damage to a case of red wine.

Seriously though, the supplement resveratrol is already out. I might go pick some of it up myself. It's already thought to inhibit cancer growth too.

I usually want to jump on the band wagon of a new helpful supplement, only to find out later, that too much could kill Ya.. But I do love burgandy, does that count?

Give it a try Sally. If anyone was well deserving of a good glass of vino, I'd think you are the one! You've been through the ringer the last few days!

Hmmmmmm -- I wonder if the supplements give you a headache like red wine? That always happened with me even before MS arrived on the scene. Those mice get all the breaks!!!! LOL

You can bet they weren't giving those mice "quality" wine. Probably something bought by the volume like from Costco.

The thought of even a sip of red wine right now is more than I can fathom.

I read an article (that expanded on the fox article you quoted above) in this morning's paper. What I gathered from reading it was that the data was so skewed they could not understand the results. Apparently the previous testing done along these lines had a very high incidence of infertility (despite longevity) and this test showed the laboratory animals to have normal fertility and reproduction rates.
