Occasionally I have had reactions that would be like a mild redness and warmth to the area of injection. This wouldn't last but a couple of days and really didn't bother me that much. As they say, nothing to write home about. Well last Monday, that's Monday of LAST week, I gave myself my shot. it was one of those dream shots. You know when it doesn't burn or hurt at all and you can't even tell where to put the band aid because there isn't even a blood spot. So the next day the site is really hurting. It feels like a severe bruise under the skin. And it's still there after 8 days. If I sit or lay in one spot for to long, it's very incapacitating to stand up. I like to lay on my side to sleep and it takes a while for the pain to go away for me to lay on that leg. It hurts to bend over, etc. Any one else have any similar reaction? Should I call my neuro?

Sounds like you may have hit a bone and maybe it's bruised. Just guessing, but you should probably call the Doc or Call the Biogen nurse. This may have happened to someone else.
Still hurting after a week is not good, so you should deffinately take some action. Take care and let us know how it turns out. Hugs,

This happened to me twice over the two years I was on Avonex. The office suggested warm compresses three to four times a day. It really helped to the point where the discomfort had resolved after a couple of days.

The longer I live with this ailment, the more I get to know it. I think it is a bruised muscle. If I sit or lay a certain way to long, or especially if I have to lean down to the floor, that's when it hurts the absolute worst. After walking for about ten minutes, I can finally walk without looking like I have a 'hitch in my get-a-long'. I have drawn a pattern around it with a pen so I can see what it looks like. It is a large oval like area on my upper thigh. It never leaves that area. So I don't think I hit a nerve. I finally gave up today and called my neuro's office. Unfortunately for me though, the nurses weren't available to take my call and by the time they could call me back the doc had left for the day. So she will get the message on Monday. I even said that I could call my PCP if she thought it wasn't neuro or Avonex involved. I'm just tired of the pain and because of my own stupidity, I now have to wait through the weekend.

Cherie, any ideas as to what could be the cause for the unusually painful shot site?
And Doydie, "because of my own stupidity, I now have to wait through the weekend", don't be hard on yourself. Most everyone hopes inconsistencies and problems will resolve on their own without calling the doctors' office. So we tell ourselves to be patient and wait it out. Then FRIDAY happens. ...which brings me to something I feel compelled to get off my chest...Warning! Very OT! Just what is it about Fridays, a few minutes to the close of business, the most pressing matters are presented that require immediate attention and muliple long phone calls to businessess and agencies (now closed for the weekend) to resolve? This has started happening to me late afternoons before 3 and 4 day holidays too. Sure was different when I worked. Then, I looked forward to a few stress free days off from work. Now that I'm retired though, the old much anticipated TGIFs or hooray-for-the-holidays have become a precursor to a wring my hands, worry myself nutz cluster of days till businesses and gov't agencies open again. Wish someone would have warned me before I retired that I would be exchanging stressful work weeks for stressful weekends. Not that that would have changed my retiring, perhaps I'd have been a bit better preprared and not so caught off guard for this exchange-of-events though. Used to be that weekends and holidays weren't long enough, now they're too long. Looks like I must be having a SNL Guilda Radner (may she rest in peace) moment. Either that, or, I'm just waking up to the fact that I've turned some seemingly timeless corner and become some-old-cranky who'd just as soon cancel days off for all doctors, insurance, banking and government offices. Shudder! |

Well I thought sure this was a problem in my muscle. But I guess I was proven wrong. My neuro said she thought I had hit a nerve root of a nerve root, etc. She ordered a cortisone dose pack and some Lortab. After one day of the dose pack, I would say the pain level was down by at least 50%. And my severe limitation of movement is all but gone unless I am up finishing my shopping! So I do a little, go home for a little nap and then go back out. Since we aren't having Christmas until Dec 30, I am going to stop for now so I can have the energy to go see the new grand baby Thursday.

Doydie, I'm glad that your Neuro knew just what to do to relieve your pain. WoooooHooooo. I wish all Neuros/Docs were that attuned to our needs.
Take care and kiss the new grand for me. Pictures, we need pictures. Hugs,

I know I shouldn't have gone, but what the heck. I can have pain and hobble around at my daughters house just like I can here. But my husband is on vacation and wanted to drive down to see the baby. She is 5 weeks old now. Her mommy is breast feeding her but she just started pumping so other people could have the opportunity to hold that precious little baby in their arms and give her a bottle. Her older sister never took to the bottle. Nothing but mother would do. But baby sister says it's just fine. As long as the milk in the bottle is Moms' she doesn't care what the nipple tastes like. She is just now starting to smile and discover her voice.
Her big sister thinks I am her own personal assistant when we are at their house. We made sure that she knew that Grandma just couldn't do the same things as long ads my leg is hurting like it is. I made sure I put a big fluffy pillow between us so she could lean on my but not hurt my leg. I enjoyed the day and 1/2 at their house but was glad to get home. We did go to Target but I gladly used their motor scooter. |
