They've taken two proteins that, individually, stimulate the immune system. But when they fuse them together in the lab, sprinkle them on B-cells and give them back intravenously, they suppress it!

The treatment was effective with a single dose with no apparent side effects.

I have one question. I've always wondered about this when they say "mice with MS". How do they know the mouse has MS? Do they do an MRI? An LP? It's a dx that takes so long for some people - what with eliminating dozens of other conditions and all - how do they dx MS in mice? What's the protocol?

My cog fog is brutal these days so the answer may be very obvious.....ya'll don't laugh at me if it is!

I think (THINK) the give rats and Mice not MS, but a disease (stating with e??) and from knowledge they gave it to them and resulting behaviors work on it. It's not MS, mice aren't humans so us MSers don't alway benefit as benefits of cure not transferable. Hope we do this time.

What you are referring to is called Experimental Allergic Encephalomyelitis.(EAE) It is a disease that is induced into mice and although it mimics MS in humans it is VERY different. They have been using the EAE mouse model for decades in MS research and for decades there has not been any treatments that have worked in that poor mouse that have eventually been beneficial to human MS patients.

Back in the mid 90's, my wife was enrolled in a MS clinical trial for a drug that stopped and reversed MS in the "mouse". After about a year into the trial, the high dose of the drug caused a fatal heart attack in a patient and the trial was quickly halted and abandoned.

The time span for a discovery of this nature and when it may be trialled on humans is about 10 years!

They often "cure" mice., but never me. Ah, to be a mouse. Mice and rats have much shorter life-spans so testing for long-term side effects can only be done with humans.

The difficulty in magazine articles is the folks writting them often don't know what they are writing about. Just the idea that someone had figured out how to give a mouse MS would be ground breaking. In this case it's EAE again and I can't count the number of times science has cured the mouse of EAE. Ken
