Cost of mestinon
 

It is a generic drug now. My pharmacy charges $34.00. I just started taking it again myself. I believe my last dose was in 1981. I do not remember what it cost then. My husband was in the military and I had a $2.00 copayment at that time.

I get mine at Rite Aide. I have insurance and I pay $20 for a month's supply which is 120 tablets. It would not matter how many tablets. It is by the month. Pretty crazy if you ask me. I am getting the generic 60 mg.

Insurance companies work out a contract price of how much things SHOULD cost. If you look at those statements they send you in the mail, they says things like:

Test X Billed: $5,000 Allowable: $150

People without insurance are getting screwed and having to pay the full $5,000 that is being billed. I don't remember getting similar statements for medication, but insurance companies work out the same deal with the pharmacies that they do with the testing companies.

I did get a really odd one for a recent stay in the hospital. As being in the hospital was not my choice, I refused most treatments that they wanted to give me as I was afraid they would delay my surgery. The total billed for the stay was $300. The total insurance paid: $1,350. They explained in a note at the bottom that even when the bill comes in below the contract price, they pay what they've negotiated. I'm surprised the hospital hasn't asked me to come back and stay a few more days.

I pay $5.00 for Generic, or $15.00 for Name Brand, for 30 day supply. If Neurologist would write the prescription for 90 days, then cost would be $10.00 for Generic, and $40.00 for Name Brand. I have zero copay, and zero deductible.

Just curious, but do any of you take the long acting mestinon. My doctor wants me on it at night, but my insurance won't cover it as they say the short acting one does the same thing. If I get up during the night, I just take another pill, otherwise I let it go until the morning.

Do you have trouble swallowing the first pill of the morning? Insurance companies are all about taking your money and finding excuses to not give any of it back.... if you do have trouble with the first pill then your doctor is right and you need the time-release to get through the night. If you don't have trouble with the first pill, I don't think I'd get stressed out with a fight for it.

I can usually swallow alright. Its more of a weakness issue where I wake up and can't move enough to get out of bed. I need to start keeping the bottle and a cup of water on my night stand.
