Default for Annie59: lasting effects of Mestinon

Annie, I'm sorry, I just saw your private message asking about the link to the article. I somehow never manage to notice I have private messages. I replied privately, but I'm replying here, too, to make sure you see it.

The abstract of the article is here:

Abby & Annie,

Thank you both for the info, I read the abstract the other day. I saw my neuro this am, he prescribed Mestinon and strongly advised me NOT to start the meds until after my SFEMG on Thursday. He said even the smallest amount of Mestinon can mask the MG symptoms. I didn't even get to ask the question!

Everyone is so helpful, I have found more information than I ever thought possible on this forum.

Thank you all so very much!

Rachel

Abby, Oh gosh this is great!!!!!!!!! This helps my case. The my 'nutty' neuro who did my SFEMG 'ON MY STRONGEST ARM' would never admit that I should have been off longer or that the meds can last longer. She even argued this point with my pulmo who is far far her senior and the sweetest fella. He tries to defend her but as of our last conversation he is getting some of the problem with her.

I was back in some notes the other nite I found a note about how this doc told a fellow MGer that mestinon is useless as she threw a prescription of it at him. He initially had to be referred to her twice to even get any tests done as she didnt believe it the first time. When he had positive tests she said he had to go on high dose steroids for a year (or two I think). He concerned said is there side effects I should be concerned about? She said simply no. She is very brief like this. It is hard to believe she is the muscle neuro this top midwest hospital/clinic brought on. She is not who I had when I was admitted for a probable myasthenic crisis from an appointment with a neuro that was a movement specialist.

Again Thank you so Abby

Annie,

I'm so happy when I can be of some small help around here!

Do you know the joke about the guy who was searching frantically for his wrist-watch under a streetlight? His friend comes and helps him search. Eventually it comes out that the guy lost the watch on a different corner. "What? So why are you searching here?"

"Oh," he says, "because the light's better over here."

Reminds me of your "strongest arm" experience.

Keep plugging away. You will make progress. Your persistence is way more valuable than you realize--it just takes a long time for the benefits to start showing up.
