Default How to lose weight?

I am so tired of feeling fat...I tried dieting and lowering calories. I can't seem to resist the food tho...I'm supposed to eat less than 1200 cals a day to lose a pound a week. I eat about 2000 cals a day on normal. 1200 is like hardly anything! Plus I don't have anything else in my life that I enjoy...food is my thing...I cook wonderfully, I love to eat, my husband loves to eat. I'm about 15 pounds overweight, and most of it is in my stomach. I got sick while I was pregnant, so my tummy never got a chance to recooperate. I try to walk on my treadmill, but I get weak so fast, or I get a bad flare up that lasts weeks. How am I supposed to get skinny without being able to excercise? Any advise would be appreciated. I hope this finds you strong and well.
Thank you,

Jessica

Jessica,
Oh I know where you are coming from because I as well am going through the same struggle with the weight thing. I have gained weight from Prednisone it seems like anything I even looked a was an instant pound on me. I would say I was about 20 pounds over what I was comfortable with and just was unhappy with not only my swollen moon face from Prednisone but the extra weight in general so I joined Jenny Craig. I am on the 1200 cal thing too and boy is it hard cause I crave the good stuff.. Bread, chips, chocolate, fries all the comforting junk food (I feel like between that and shopping its all I have to make me feel better) sometimes I do go off track but since I joined in October I have actually lost 18 pounds soo close! I feel so much better healthwise and I really dont get much excercise because I tire pretty fast so when I can I get on my recumbent bike or I will use the wii fit or do a little walking around the mall or even my neighborhood. I guess any little bit helps.
Good Luck!
-Tracey

Hi, Jessica. I sure do sympathize with your question. I lost 50 pounds before I came down with MG, and maintaining the weight loss is a real struggle.

Here's one thing I know. Although a calorie is a calorie from the point of view of weight loss, some kinds of food will make you feel full longer than others. So, if you stick to your calorie guide, you'll lose weight no matter what you eat. But if you eat the right kinds of foods, you'll suffer from hunger less.

First, anything with fiber (whole grains, fruits, vegetables) will fill you stomach more than the same amount of calories of something without fiber. You also get to eat a larger quantity for the same amount of calories.

Second, you might think about the glycemic index of different foods (you can find charts on-line). This measures how fast a certain food raises your blood sugar. If you eat high-glycemic foods, your blood sugar goes up faster--and then down faster, so you feel hungrier sooner. If you eat low-glycemic foods, your blood sugar stays steady longer, and you don't get hungry as fast. The charts may surprise you, although generally high-protein foods and high-fiber foods have lower glycemic loads. You basically want to eat like a diabetic would.

You probably already know all this, but I'm posting it just in case it's helpful. I also find it helpful to have a cup of coffee--often decaf--after a meal. It helps the meal last longer and keeps me fuller.

Abby

Sugarkiss, have you consider counting carbs?

I did the 100 carbs or less a day and loss thirty pounds. Heck, I was on a roll and could of loss more, but I was getting too skinny.

If you love meat, it's definitely the diet for you, but you still can have bread and a candy bar on it.

Jessica, My dog has pancreatitis. He is on a prescription high fiber/low fat diet. If we aren't careful, he can lose too much weight. That, like Abby said, is a perfect basis for losing weight. Drinking a glass of water before eating helps. Eating slowly, chewing slowly and listening to your body when it says you are full helps too. Getting enough sleep will help. Keeping all "white" stuff out of your diet. Adding in as much fruits and veggies as you can. Some people swear by soup (minus any sodium) because it has lots of water, especially when there are a lot of veggies in it. Celery is a natural diuretic, so don't eat it too close to bedtime or you'll be up peeing all night. Take most of the sodium out of your diet. Eat whole foods.

Exercise is hard to do but there are easier ways to exercise. I don't normally tout products but this is really easy, uses both basic Pilates and strength training and doesn't take up much room. You can do it in "spurts" throughout the day or earlier in the day when you have more energy.

Look at all labels for any hidden sugars.

I have celiac disease so I've had to be super creative at getting more fiber in my diet. Nuts and seeds help.

I hope you can find a balance that works for you.
