Default Sleepiness

Can MG make you sleepy? It can make you tired, sure, but how about just plain sleepy?

Mary, Have you asked your primary doctor to check for obvious causes of fatigue other than MG? Like anemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, sleep apnea, etc.?

MG can "put me to sleep" after I go out and run errands. If your MG is so bad that you are really tired - if MG is the cause - then you might need to talk to your neurologist.

How much sleep do you get a night? Do you take a short nap during the afternoon? Do you have a good diet, one that balances out your blood sugar throughout the day? You know, like eating every few hours to keep an even blood sugar level and not eating too many things like sugars that quickly bring blood sugar up and then drop it way down?

There are a lot of possibilities for sleepiness, including a low thyroid and low cortisol. I think seeing your primary doctor is a great idea to try to figure this out.

Annie

Before my treatments started (Mestinon and IVIg), I was lucky if I could get through an 8-hour workday without passing out at my desk. And by the time I got home, I'd be so tired, I had no choice but to take a nap, otherwise I couldn't function the rest of the evening. I can't say if that's typical or not, just my experience. Once I started my treatment, I immediately had more energy. In fact, the day following my first dose of Mestinon, people at work remarked that I didn't look like I was ready to pass out. Even these last two weeks, when my symptoms have flared up, I'm not as sleepy as I was when I was going untreated.

Looking back at when my symptoms started, I remember driving home in the middle of the day from a conference and having extreme difficulty staying awake. I kept stopping along the way for caffeine and fresh air. I should have been home in 5 hours and it took me nearly 7.
