Hi, I am wondering about the effects of either lidocaine or epinephrine on myasthenia gravis. Yesterday I had a filling replaced and immediately felt the effects of the epinephrine in the dose. This happened to me the past few times at the dentist and also after having my eyes dilated for and eye exam. I know that epinephrine makes you feel jittery and nervous, but I never had this before my diagnosis.
I felt "shaky and generally not well" for the remainder of the day after these episodes. No specific muscle weakness just generally weak like I had to lie down for the rest of the day. Any thoughts? Thanks |

Consultation with the patient’s neurologist is recommended prior to dental treatment in order to ascertain the extent of neuromuscular weakness, frequency of neuromuscular exacerbations or crises and to discuss the need for medical management to optimize the treatment outcome in the unstable patient.Myasthenia Gravis: A Manual for the Health Care Provider (PDF) - page 100 Take care, -Mark- Last edited by Panorama; 02-07-2014 at 03:55 PM. |

I ended up in the hospital after my last dental filling. Didn't know I had a neuromuscular disease at the time. As soon as I got the injection, my heart started pounding and felt like it would jump out of my chest. The next day, I had more episodes of this and became very weak and shaky and had a hard time breathing. I just got worked up for heart issues and told I had an arythmia. I will think twice about another filling.

this makes me nervous! I am overdue for the dentist, never had a cavity, but I think I have two or three now.. ugh (teeth got put on the back burner with all this fun)! I am super anxious about the entire visit, including the lidocaine.. Maybe timing it with IVIG is a good idea as well?

Just for the record, I had a dental procedure done (cap, filling, took a long time with lots of injections), and it didn't cause me any problem.
