Default tense muscles

Do your muscles stay tight all of the time? I have had muscle spasms in my neck and shoulders for years. I would end up at hospital so I started learning to massage my neck and shoulders but since before Christmas(before hospital incident) my muscles stays tense everywhere. I am using muscle cream and massagers, sleeping with heating pad. I actually cut it off before I go to sleep. I have problems picking up my legs because they are so heavy and tense and then it becomes painful. I let my sister feel the back of my legs and they are like rocks. I have a back massager and bought me a neck massager and it helps but goes right back tense if I use that muscle, with regular everyday use. Anybody else have this and any suggestions? When I use to exercise, I would gain weight because my muscles bulked up fast and when I put on my clothes, it would like incredible hulk was wearing my clothes. Could it be that I just have severe muscle spasms.

That honestly sounds like spasticity to me. Spasticity is not part of MG. MG people have the opposite issue, poor (mushy) muscle tone. We may have some strained muscles and small spasms at times as stronger muscles try to compensate for weaker ones, but the widespread, severe spasticity you report is not typical of MG.

ok then maybe I do not have mg..now I have to figure out why I am having this. Thanks for your reply. I do not care what it is I just want help. It is sounding more and more like MS.I thought that spasticity was when your leg would contract but not release. Oh I do not have mushy muscle tone. I have tight muscle tone. So tight that my legs are weak because they too heavy to lift.

It sounds more and more like MS to me and my eye doctor said that you can go awhile before a positive MRI scan. My daughter also has complaints of muscle pain and my mother was in bed with muscles for three months one time but nobody knew what it was. I knew it was from my muscles tensing up and I told them this at the hospital because when my muscles relaxes I am fine but I thought spasticity was when your muscles contracted and could not release.

Have you had any positive tests done for mg? Too much muscle tone is definitely not a problem with mg or Lems except for maybe in scattered areas due to weak unbalanced muscles. It's more like jello muscles.

There is also a disease called stiff person syndrome that has tight painful muscles and is sometimes confused with mg. Hope you get it figured out soon.

No I have not have a positive test for mg. Waiting to go to neuro to have more test. When I went into the ER my words were slurred and at first I felt no pain then I felt pain and I told him it felt like a muscle spasm in the jaw and could I please have something to relax muscles. He said no you cant because you may have mg and that will make it worse. That's what I was trying to get at when I asked questions. That's what I have always thought weakness is, when you legs were like jello and gave away. But I couldn't lift my leg because it was too heavy and tight and they said that was leg weakness and I was confused on that. When I try to exercise my legs gets heavier and tighter till I can not move them and they are better after I rest so I guess that's where me and the doctors had out wires crossed.

I looked at the stiff person syndrome and it is possible except the noise part, that does not bother me and I have had blurred and double vision. I have had eye vision changes. I also am more sensitive to heat. I feel like I am going to pass out. I have never had this before. when I take a hot bath to relax muscles then my muscles do get like wet noodles and has pins and needles. I then just lay there. in extreme cold my muscles contracts badly.

I also have "floppy weak" muscles with my illness, like jello. How are your reflexes? what are they doing to further work you up at this point? Have you had a lumbar puncture, have you had the blood tests for stiff man syndrome? Do you have increased muscle mass, no change or decreased? (I know some disorders will give you increased muslce mass- i think stiff man does).

Hoping you find some good answers and treatment soon!

I sometimes have a kind of tight drawing feeling in my face and in my neck, but it is usually when I am otherwise weak and I think these muscles are just trying to compensate for the ones not working at the time.

When my legs are weak, like when they gave me IV Benadryl, I could not lift them off the bed, but they were not tight at all. Just extremely heavy.

I have not had the lumbar puncture yet. I do not know if I had blood test for stiff muscle but they told me that they did every blood work that they could think of. I do not think that I have increase muscle mass unless I exercise. At times my muscles are fine but some days they get tight with me walking or using whatever muscle and that's when it gets painful and I can not lift my legs well. My neck hurts and tingles a lot so I think I have pinched nerve in it.
