Shocked azathioprine prednisone and tooth extraction

Has anyone had a tooth extraction or dental work done being immune suppressed? Been having teeth problems lately. Need dental work done. My IVIG praise God has worked wonders. Any advice? Thanks.

The MG Manual has a section on dental care for the MG patient:
Consultation with the patient’s neurologist is recommended prior to dental treatment in order to ascertain the extent of neuromuscular weakness, frequency of neuromuscular exacerbations or crises and to discuss the need for medical management to optimize the treatment outcome in the unstable patient.
Myasthenia Gravis: A Manual for the Health Care Provider (PDF) - page 100

Be sure both your neurologist and your dentists understand the issues involved with MG patents and dental care.

I would suspect that your dentist will want to prescribe a short run of antibiotics before doing the extraction just as a safety precaution.

Have you had dental before, while having MG? Have you had lidocaine/xylocaine before?

Celesete is right about either pre-medicating or having a week of antibiotics if you're on an immuno. Are you more prone to infections now?

And it depends on the type of dental you're having. If it's only a surface cavity, you might only need to pre-medicate. If it's more involved like a root canal, the dentist might want to do that and a week of antibiotics.

Do you know what antibiotics you can safely take and not tick off your MG?

I've had dental done with MG. I do okay, but sometimes I need to rest my jaw while there. My dentist understands this and allows me to rest for a matter of seconds between drilling. Yeah, even seconds help.

My MG does get a little worse a few days afterwards, but I make sure I can rest a lot for those days.

Everyone is different. Sometimes those meds can tank MGers and sometimes it doesn't even bother them!

You could also speak to your internist about this. They can make recommendations to the dentist.

I hope it all goes well.

Annie
