Statins cause nerve damage, and cell deaths.

Here is a current thread on PN with some eye-opening photos of nerve damage from statins, and some youtubes with the chemistry of how this happens.

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...hlight=statins

In reality the push for statins is ending, slowly but surely. Soon they will be discarded for safer newer drugs. This is already happening.

You won't find many pharmacists who will tell you the truth, as they won't discourage RXs today. Most doctors are not well informed either.

I provide the other side of the safety profile so patients here can then decide for themselves if they think a statin is worth taking for themselves.

When I went to my first visit with neuro-muscular Dr he said no Statins. I was having trouble with leg muscles. He said the cause was Statins. Sure enough 2 weeks later my legs got better. My GP wanted me to try a new drug but my MG said no.

Ron, You can do whatever you choose to do, but you should be aware that statins can cause a myasthenic crisis.

Is there a reason why you were put on one? Was it a GOOD reason?

You might not know right away that the statin is destroying your nerves. They can cause "wild type neurons" which might not revert to normal!!! Correct, Mrs. D?

If it's a cholesterol issue, there are far better ways to deal with that. How high is yours?

I'm a bit cynical when it comes to drug companies. Their first order of business is selling drugs.

There are risks for people who don't have MG and take them. I don't know of any neuro who would want their MG patient to risk taking a statin.

That's my opinion, and you can do whatever you want to do. But be on the lookout for any sudden weakness or other peripheral nerve symptoms!

Good luck.

Annie

If you decide to take them, you need to supplement with a good quality CoQ-10. Statins block the formation of CoQ-10 that is naturally made in our livers. Qunol is a nice affordable new solubilized form, that improves absorption from the GI tract.
Therefore you only need 100mg a day of this (instead of 300mg typically). This is available at WalMart and Costco locally and on Amazon.

And I don't know if the damage to the dendrites that appears in the newest photos reverses. But there is a YouTube explaining how statins actually kill cells, which I really think you should watch:

What a brilliant video! I love the no nonsense presentation and the clear explanation of what statins do. Thanks, Mrs. D!

Please be aware of the fact that both prednisone and cellcept can cause high cholesterol levels. Cellcept directly and prednisone both directly and indirectly; last because it can cause you to eat more and more fatty stuff. This you can have a little influence on (though it can be hard, I know!) but the direct effect you can't.

So please be aware not to get into this crazy pill spiral I was forced in a little while ago: cellcept/prednisone -> side effects -> pills for side effects known to effect MG -> forced to take even more prednisone -> more side effect pills -> etcetera....

I'm not saying the statins will give you problems, but, please be aware it is a possibility.

Good luck
