Default Single fibre emg study

I just got a call out of the blue from my neurologist. He tells me he wants to do a single fibre emg study on me. Can anybody tell me what this involves. I had emg studies done where they shock the muscles and put the lovely needles in a variety of muscles. I can't say I enjoyed it.I would love to hear from anybody who has had this done.

Maurice,
Thanks for the web site. I searched on the internet earlier but could only find what the single fibre emg is used to diagnose, not how it is done. It seems to be exactly what I had imagined, I'm not a fan of needles.

Default Hey there!

KPearl,

Just think though, it will be over before you know it and you will be a step closer to the right meds..........

I can relate! I HATE needles! Everytime they start my PICC line, I cry like a baby!

Hang in there! It WILL get better soon!

I had mine done on my hand. My doctor stopped when it was obviously positive so it did not last very long. They pretty much concentrate on one or two spots.

It still is not a fun test as it is with a needle, but it goes fast.

Thumbs up Hey Rumpled!

Is that the one where they probe you with a needle over and over? I had that one done - not fun, but not horrible either!!!!!

My neuro said most women did not complain of any pain -- it was MEN who complained!

Yes.

I had to put my hand on a table, lift one finger (*the* finger LOL) and keep the other fingers on the table. I was supposed to lift the finger higher as instructed and after a while, I lost track of the finger. It was one needle, higher up in the arm - the needle was put in and out a few times, but for the most part, it was kept in. I got to watch the screen with the doctor - oooooeee! Like I understand it. All the annoying noise. It may have lasted about 10 minutes or so total - I cannot remember. At times it felt like forever but the appointment was pretty short.

My husband watched - I think he was a bit green. He does not like the needles. He tends to shy away when I give myself shots in the stomach at night (growth hormone).

Erin - your neuro is a hoot!
