Thumbs Down Thrush.....

Just wondering how many of you have constant thrush.....?

I gargle, brush, eat plenty of yogurt, but still need my Nystatin or get thrush all the time......is that normal?

My onc told me I would have to be on the lookout for it all the time, but this is just plain silly! 2 days without my oral meds and I have it again! I know it's a small thing, but it irritates me to no end....just another lovely side effect of all the meds, I suppose..........

Do you think it is b/c I am @ a "high" dose of pred? I'm still @ 60 for a while - until after the IV IG..........

I go in week after next for another round - 5 days @ 400 mL.........always feel great after that! And no need for the plasma exchange - yay!

Any input would be appreciated.......

Erin

Hi Erin,
I haven't had thrush (touch wood) but do need to eat yogurt everyday or else! Since October I've had a similar infection though, on the sides of my nose. My GP gave me some cream to help it, but it hasn't. I'm hoping to go in someday this week to see if there is anything else she can give me to try. My nose has been so sore and itchy for months now, but I hate complaining about something so trivial compared to other problems in the grand scheme of things! However, the red nose and constant itching makes me worry that soon someone is going to think I'm a illicit drug user or something!! Never a nice feeling when you are intrusted with other people's children! Can you imagine PTA converstaions???
Hope you find some helpful suggestions from others!

Thumbs up Hi Kathy!

You have the BEST sense of humor! I laughed and laughed when I ead about your red nose and you rubbing it! Just don't act jumpy or they'll really start to wonder! LOL

I get nasty cold sores now and was prescribed Valtrax - which I think is for genital herpes - that was not fun picking up my meds.......I went into a long rambling explaination @ Walgreens - I was so embarrassed! It was hysterical!

So the new school is being opened up? How exciting! You know, I think the thing that I like most about you is the fact that you love your job - really love it - and it shows! MY son has had the worst luck with some awful teachers, so to find one that really loves her kids so much is so nice! Plus, you are always so upbeat! When you told me to embrace my chipmunk cheeks it made me laugh!

I think the Imuran is starting to take effect! I've been on it for 2 months now, but I still think it is starting to do it's thing..........Have you ever been on it? Did you like it?

Regarding the Cold Sores...

I would highly recommend going to the health store and picking up Super Lysine plus. (I have used the Quantum Health Brand). These little tabs will kick the butt out of the cold store in 3 days. Welllll worth the money!!!

Regarding the Thrush...

I think there is an underlying issue. My suggestion would be to add an acidophilus caplet with your yogurt....again - health store. Sometimes trying a 'natural' method vs. a 'man-made' prescription can do the trick.

HI,

THe prednisone definitely has something to do with it. It raises your blood sugar which can contribute to the yeast overgrowth.

Erin, yes thrush comes from overgrowth of yeast. It is encouraged further by being immunosuppressed. Talk with your doc about it. I use diflucan "daily" (aka skip bout half the week usually) But you can get it in your bloodstream and be in trouble with it in no time. I think it was missy that says probiotics and they have worked for me as well. I just forget to keep them on hand all the time. HOpe that helps!
