Default Mestinon dosage

My dosage is as follows-1/2 to 2 tablets 4 times daily. I increase 1/2 each week til dosage is correct? I now take 1 tab 4x daily. Isn't it more productive to have dosage at waking hours, where you can use it for muscle strength-rather than sleep- 3 x daily? Do you all take your mestinon 3 or 4 times daily? How am I going to be able to know when my dosage is right 1/2 to 2 tabs daily- will I know if I have too much-Can I expect to have increased strength & duration with increased medication or just not as much measurable weakness?

I think dosage goes with individual need, what ever the dose, just so it is evenly spread throughout the day. I think you are doing fine as long as you are feeling better.

I have had enough experience with Mestinon at this point that I am allowed to adjust my dose as needed. I first started with 60 mgs every 4-6 hours as needed. If I didn't feel a good amount of relief, I called my neuro and she would tell me how I could adjust. At this point, because I know the fluctuations I take it more on an as needed basis, 1/2 to 1 at a time. Some days, I don't need any. Other days I'm taking it every 2 hours.

When in doubt, I take just a 1/2, then another 1/2 if I am not getting enough relief within 30 minutes.

The symptoms of too much Mestinon are much the same as not enough, except in addition to weakness I notice increased persperation and muscle twitching. If you have started other meds, like steroid or immune modulating therapy, the amount of Mestinon you take will probably decrease as those start to build up and work in your system, so it can be an ever changing limit on the Mestinon.

You really should talk to your doctor to get better guidelines of how you should take it to determine your correct level. Your doc should have an idea of what level of weakness you are at, and really would be the best to advise you how to build up to your best dosage schedule. I would call them right away and tell them you need more direction.

Hugs!

Becky

Smile Hi Becky's mom!

I take mine when I start to wilt.....you will know when you need it. Your doc really should have given you better instructions, though.

MG is a pain in the butt and you do not need more stress to add to it!

Hope this helps!

Erin

There are days when I only need 2 and then there are days when I take 5 or 6 - just depends on how I feel and what I did the day b/4..........

After 8 years of taking mestinon, I too take it as I feel I need it. Having good communication with your neuroligist is so important.

Hi! I take 1 and 1/2 tabs x 3 a day... 30 min before breakfast, lunch, and supper...then I having started also taking a 180mg timespan at night as well. This makes me feel better in the morning.

I was told to keep taking this and never take the medication within three hours of the last dose...because overdosage might occur.....

I can really tell when it is time for my next dose....I feel tired and my hands and legs go weak....and my speech is affected.

I was taking 1 (60 mg) every 4 hours. My neuro upped it to 2, but I couldn't handle it. My legs hurt so bad, in discussion with my neuro, I have switched to 1.5 tablets every 4 hours. I also get a thick tounge when I need more. My speech becomes garbled, I sound like a drunk.

Other symptoms of too much mestinon:
*with every move I made I thought I was going to pull a hamstring
*my legs were so sore and weak, I felt like I had been lifting weights
*cramps, I got terrible painful cramps in my toes, bottom of my feet, and calves. I also got bad charlie horses in my upper ribs
*my whole body twitched inside, a very strange feeling
