Exclamation Sudden Weakness in extremities, Hospital inconclusive

I'm posting this on behalf of my dad, hoping maybe someone might recognize his symptoms. Today is Tuesday, on Saturday he woke up with achy muscles which got progressively worse moving to the neck and loss of motor function in starting with his hands and his upper legs shortly after. He slept a lot on Saturday and also mentioned a muscular soreness in his throat. Sunday he was completely unable to function at work, the pain in his legs became excruciating and his biceps felt on the verge of cramping. Monday he went to urgent care, labs taken but no same day results so he went to the hospital that evening. Hospital said labs were normal except for borderline electrolytes and they ruled out CVA and any heart problems. He was diagnosed with Myalgia, given IV Sodium Hydrochloride 1000mL and send home with Ibuprophen 800mg. Today the leg pain is subsiding slightly but still painful when moving, no motor function in hands, and is extremely weak. Only med history is Hypertension and is complying with his Lisinopril prescription, he is a healthy man who runs 5 miles daily, former bicycle racer, and marathoner so he is no stranger to muscular fatigue. He describes his pain as severe muscular fatigue and borderline cramping, but having done nothing of extreme physical nature it is illogical. He has sustained no insect bites in the past week, has not been recently ill, and has had no complaints in general. If you have any ideas please let me know, our PCP is taking forever to take him in although we're urging for a simple referral to a Neurologist. Thank you for your help.

1. Was the onset of weakness symmetrical (left & right at same time)? How are his reflexes?

2. Why on earth is it taking so long to get a referral? Shouldn't that just be a simple phone call or note? Is the doctor that dismissive of his symptoms (the myalgia, maybe, but the loss of motor function seems serious)? Of course, if he's still getting better, you might want to give it a few more days.

I'm biased (having MMN, an almost-impossible-to-diagnose neurodegenerative disease myself) but you might want to push for an EMG (nerve conductance test.)

Myalgia means "muscle pain". Very helpful. Here's what Wikipedia says:

Quote:
Myalgia, or muscle pain, is a symptom of many diseases and disorders. The most common causes are the overuse or over-stretching of a muscle or group of muscles. Myalgia without a traumatic history is often due to viral infections. Longer-term myalgias may be indicative of a metabolic myopathy, some nutritional deficiencies or chronic fatigue syndrome.

Sorry for the late reply:
1. The weakness was symmetrical and I'm not sure about his reflexes since I wasn't present for this doc visit.

2. Hospital didn't give a referral for Neurologist, instead said to see PCP and given Monday's holiday he wasn't able to get in until yesterday and he was referred. Neurologist is on Mon and his legs seem to be getting progressively better but motor function is staying the same. PCP called saying labs are a bit abnormal but it was not specified to me which ones. Guess I know now that any emergency comes up, if not a trauma, wait to see PCP or you leave with a BS diagnosis when a real problem is present. The neurologist will almost certainly do an EMG so i guess we'll just wait and see.

Thank you for your concern, I'll post if something new comes up.
