Default Nerve Block

Not sure if this is where to post this but will try
I have just had my second shoulder surgery in 8 months first ortho which didn't take and was only able to lift my arm about chest high and no more second was in Jan 2013 they cut open to re-attach and did a manipulation and had nerve block both times, and now there is no sensation or ability to lift the arm at all or flex my trap muscles can move the arm with pt help or my own and freely move elbow down but if arm is just at my side it is like the switch is turned off for the signal to lift it could this be from nerve block?? or other really worried at this point. Jay I am 52 but fit and trim and healthy and stay flexible

Find a neurologist...get EMG/NCV, maybe SSEP if he'll do it. Sounds like you need help!

Yeah, that's what they told me too. Glad I didn't listen. My surgeon permanently damaged my brachial plexus during my shoulder arthroscopy that started off a whole host of complications that will never resolve, and was in denial for 6 months post op. On my own, I went to a neurologist at 3 weeks post op due to atrophy, weakness, numbness and severe pain, got the electrodiagnostic studies and started more effective therapy. ****** off the surgeon as his only explanation was that "it was a big surgery...need some more oxycodone?," He was flat wrong and to this day still says he doesn't know what went wrong, if anything (according to him). Res ipsa locator....

Wow now I am worried, in the beginning they said it was massive rotator cuff damage and the Subscapularis Tendon was the one they had to go back in and re-attach which is around the Brachial plexus which in the first surgery he had said it was right at that point where he would have to cut in instead of ortho but I think the ortho was the easy way out and then he put the second surgery down as a re-tear, again thanks for the info I had already sent a note off to my neurologist to see what he thinks, but I am not sure why we had to wait 7 months to do a mri to see whats wrong, thats 7 months of being a 1 1/2 armed bandit (per say) the therapy only gets you as far as range of motion via you other arm helping or they are moving it and then left on your own.

Maybe...maybe not. And I don't hear a reason not to do the neurodiagnostics right now. Some partial thickness tears do okay with just therapy. There must have been something about your exam that your doc felt it was more of a minor tear to not order an MRI sooner than 7 months. Had a full thickness tear been intially suspected, I am sure an MRI would have (or should have) been done much sooner as the tendon retracts, worsening outcome with late surgical intervention. Your situation kinda is what it is, and while your surgeon may have his own time frame that he is looking at, you must be mindfull of what you think is going on and take the reigns and drive otherwise you are the only one who will experience the final results! If it doesn't sound right, it probably isn't....

we both suspected it early on that the Subscapularis Tendon repair did not take due the lack of range of motion and no strength but he said every give it another few more weeks then final said lets do the mri and see what is up and of course thats just what it showed and then he said well i have to make a 6-8" cut here and go in deep under the muscles to reach it and make a repair, I know that this time the next day I did have to have full strength oxi to take care of the pain for a day but I know my body well and after a few days I figured the nerve block should have worn off as they said and had no sensation at all to move the arm and mentioned that right from the beginning and all said don't try to lift it yet it will come, I feel there should have been some type of sensation to do so and it would cause pain but nothing at all, I am not losing hope but have to stay open minded to all outcomes at this point but can't continue on with life and the next step until I know the outcome and once again they feel I will sit home drugged up and eat bon bons all day.

Doesn't really burn but it's just and annoying slight sharp pain and discomfort, going to have the emg test and that will be at the 8 week point after surgery the surgeon said not to worry about no sensation to lift the arm that it will come with pt and this is normal after a surgery I just don't think it is and not going to wait 8 months again like after the first surgery this is my life's well being on the line and this time I want answers,,

Default nerve block

Well had my six week follow up and the dr was a little upset that I wanted a nerve test which I already schedule on my own outside of him and he said go ahead and have it done that it won't show anything but to satisfy my curiosity and then went on with the exam lift my arm up and said hold it there but it went right down I ask if this is normal he said when you cut open for a operation it is trauma to the shoulder and the body shuts the nerve off !? huh!? I never heard of that?
