I had a V/P shunt placed on 7/09/2009 for NPH. I have had the condition (sub clinical) since contacting mumps meningitis when I was 6 years old. In the last few years the triad of symptoms became very intense and so the shunt was placed. With each change in pressure I have had intense stabbing pain usually on the right side or by naval area. The NS said it was bladder infections, problems with bladder sling etc. All testing was negative. Went for a second opinion. He did a shunt series which I viewed and could see catheter goes in loop above naval area, down on left side and loops again on peritoneal floor then travels over to right side and looks like it is into area at a 45 degree angle. The "second opinion neurologist" did a CT scan only of my head and shunt nothing of the abdomen. When I saw him he said shunt and catheter are fine, that my pain is from scar tissue/adhesions from other surgeries. I never have had any abdominal/pelvic pain previously, now I have it almost daily. As I said sharp stabbing pain that takes your breath away. have to stop what you are doing and change position immediately. My question is: is this normal ? do a lot of people suffer from this? the neurologist said he could send me to a surgeon or take the shunt out????!!!!Why he would suggest that is beyond me. If anyone could give me any feedback I would certainly appreciate it. I feel like I am floundering out here alone with no one to turn to and have so many questions. Thank you all for listening.
