Default CSF leak in infant after head trauma

Hi,

My 8 month old had a pretty bad fall and had a fracture skull plus csf leak from her nose. She was put on the spinal drain for 5 days but that didn't seem to do anything for her. She has poor feeding, a lot of mucus on her throat (x-ray confirmed that her bronchial tube is inflamed), most likely the csf fluid. She's been leaking for almost 3 weeks now and I feel so hopeless and just don't know what to do. Can someone please shed some light on this matter? Would she heal on her own? How much longer will this leak continue? We really do not want to go through surgery or another ct scan. I am so bummed out about this whole thing. Any help would be greatly appreciated?

Hello and welcome to NT.

Reading your post brought tears to my eyes. As a Mom, I can't imagine anything worse than an injured baby.

I am impressed that, despite all your stress, you've had the presence of mind to research your daughter's condition. She's lucky to have such a great parent.

In addition to searching the CSF leak forum, I would suggest that you also might want to look at information on Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Head injury in children is often dismissed as something that will "take care of itself." That's why it's important to be an informed advocate for your baby. Some excellent sources for further reading include: the Brain Injury Association of America (BIAA)www.biausa.org; www.tbiguide.com and our own TBI forum here on NT http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum92.html

I would suggest that you repost your message on the CSF Leak and TBI forums where it is more likely to be seen by members who can address your specific questions.

Hang in There

i'm sorry this is happening to your baby.
i just don't know enuf about it.

however, a 2nd opinion might be in order.
a pediatric neurologist might be a help.
maybe your baby's dr can offer a referral.
it seems like she should be seen by a specialist.

the one thing that comes to mind about the leak is this; and please know i'm no specialist. but...if there's a leak coming out, maybe bacteria could go in. then it might set up as an infection. watch her for signs of that; fever, neck stiffness etc.

you might even google pediatric neurologists in your town and see if anyone turns up. a teaching hospital also usually has specialty drs, or you local childrens hospital.

please keep us posted.
