Heart A Friend

I turned 25 on Monday, May 31. On the evening of Tuesday, June 1 I received a call from the emergency room from my best friend's husband. My best friend had attempted to kill herself by over dosing on pills and alcohol, as well as having had cut herself up very badly.

He found her when he came home from work and called 911. She has since been released back into his care. I saw her last at my birthday party on the evening of Sunday, May 30. Currently, I've texted her a supportive note and she has responded that she just needs some time alone for right now, which I have respected and let her know when she's ready to see me I'll be ready to be there. I've also been keeping in contact with her husband to know how things are going.

I went to my first psychiatric appointment last night, in hopes of getting advice on how to handle our friendship through her hopeful recovery. I have another appointment next week, and am lucky in that I seem to have chemistry with the therapist I'm seeing.

I've joined this forum for personal support, so I can be strong enough to support her through this. We didn't see it coming (do we ever?), as she's always dealt with depression and has ups and downs.. and she has been acting like she was on an up. Normally, she talks about things that have been overwhelming her instead of turning self-destructive, and this time she didn't.

I am very, very thankful that she's alive and with us still to cherish. I fear for the impact this is going to have on her marriage, her future plans, her self-image, and the people around her.

Any kind words would be appreciated, any advice would be too. I feel for the people who have lost friends and family to this.. I don't know what I would have done if the call I had gotten had been him telling me he had found her to late..

I will be lurking around the Survivors of Suicide and the Depression forums.

Hello, and welcome to NT!

I'm so sorry about your friend. Just be there for her, if she needs to talk or if she just needs a friend to sit by her side.

Hugs to both of you.

Hi there.

My name is Melody, and I know a few people who have done this. Not easy to deal with at your end, I can imagine.

You are a very nice, compassionate person for coming here and sharing your story. Your friend is very lucky to have you.

Now I have a question. Does she go on the internet?
There are many support groups out there for people who have tried to commit suicide. As well as actually support groups that meet often, in churches, and temples, as well as other meeting places.

Do you think your friend might be up for this (when she gets her wits about her I mean)?

This was indeed a cry for help. I hope she is on the correct medication, and finds some way she can talk about her problems.

When we vent, and others listen, it sometimes can be half the battle.

Only when we walk around with all the stuff kept inside us, and we feel all alone, well, that's when the troubled thoughts come and stay inside our minds.

I do hope things work out well.

If she wants to come here and talk, we shall listen.

That's what we do!!!

Take care, and best of luck to you and to your friend (and her hubby).

Melody

Hi Friend and welcome to Neuro Talk. While you are lurking at SOS forum be sure to read the stickies at the top...there are some excellent reading resources re: suicide...both Prevention and the aftermath.

http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread238.html

She is fortunate to have such a caring friend. She also needs to talk about what she is feeling.
