Default do I have a tarlov cyst

Hi, I'm new to this forum and after reading a few of your posts it seems there are many like me whose lives are being drastically effected by this cyst(s), but find little help or information about it, let alone adequate treatment.

I have had lower back pain and left leg pain for more than 4 months now. I have a swelling on my sacral area , under which all the pain seems to eminate fom. Many health professional who have examined my back, look at it and say, mmm, well, but no one seems to explain what the swelling is. All my other symptoms seem very similar to those of a herniated disk, cant sit long, stand long, be on my feet for too long, and only find laying on my right side comfortable. Have been constipated throughout, and taking loads of laxatives, more recently I have developed bladder problems, hesitancy and sometimes retention for which I was hospitalized and catheterized. They thought it might be the drugs I was taking, I stopped those, had the catheter removed some days later and still have the same problems. An emergency MRI revealed no disc problems, no cauda equine, but a cyst on S2. The doctor who told me said it could be causing all the problems, but that's the last anyone has said anything about it. Reading the symptoms of a Tarlov cyst, is a like a roll call of all the symptoms I have, but where do I go from here, when I mention a Tarlov disc to my doctor, a blank look comes across her face. I am on Morphine patches, amitriptyline, and have been off work all this time and so facing financial difficulties and there seems to be no end in sight. Its all so frustrating. I am in the UK.

Welcome Linda, Glad you found us. We try to help and we learn from others too. This is a great place to find caring people.

I had a cyst on my spine and I had to have surgery to remove it. It was compressing my nerves and spinal cord from L5, to S1. I suffered with the pain you mentioned. I kept putting off the surgery. I had a few epidural blocks for the pain. Didn't get the right area. I used Lidoderm pain patches and took Tramadol.

I tried gentle PT, and Neuro surgeon let me try to get rid of the pain, or stand it, for 6 months, trying everything.

In the end of that time, I was glad to have the surgery. I woke up in recovery room pain free. You must have compression in that area. S1 does affect the bladder and bowel.

Maybe you could find out about a Caudal Epidural Block, since your cyst in rather low. They enter through the natural opening in the tail bone area and give the block (cocktail of pain meds) to the area you feel pain.

I hope you find a cure for your problem. I don't no the name of the cyst I had, it was in 1995. It showed up on a myelogram with dye and then a CT. I have been fine in that area ever since the surgery. They can do that surgery with a Laproscope now, much easier and quicker. Good luck and nice to meet you.

hello and welcome to NT,

maybe you could get another opinion? since your dr doesn't seem to know enuf about your problem. maybe she could give you another referral. maybe the dr that read your film could suggest someone to further evaluate you.

stick around. there's a lot of great people here with all good info and experience.
