Help help me

Hi I'm ashley, I am 17 years old.
I am in desperate need of help, my neurologist doesn't even know what is wrong with me.
I have had frequent migraines ever since I can remember, It has just gotten more frequent as I get older. They used to be almost 2 times a month since 2nd grade, now they're almost 3 times per week without medication. I am currently taking propanerol which is for blood pressure, and it doesn't help completely, but at least I'm down to 1 migraine a week or so. I'm not so sure. they're unpredictable. I would hear stories that some people that had frequent migraines die in there sleep of a aneurism, My aunt sherry recently had a mild stroke and she claims that she has had migraines too. her left arm and leg were completely numb or paralyzed, I'm not sure. I just started a relationship with my new boyfriend and it would break my heart to tell him that I have to go to another neurology appointment and figure out what is wrong with me when no one knows. I hope you guys can give me some advice as to what I have.

Smile Hello and Welcome!

Hello DaShadowFan
and
WELCOME to Neurotalk!!!

Here is a link to our Headaches forum.
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/forum32.html

I am so sorry to hear you are having migraines and from such a young age. I have a nephew, 6, who was just diagnosed with migraines...his mom also has had migraines from a young age. Docs told her it is a genetic thing.

Hopefully someone will come along and be able to offer advise that can help you.

As far as your new boyfriend... just a little advise from a much older "girl"... be honest with him. Depending on how "new" the relationship is... Just tell him you've been having headaches and you are going to the doctor to find out what is causing them. I know it's an old cliche' but honesty really is the best policy.

Please stick around here... join in anywhere... If you need any assistance please don't hesitate to ask... someone will always be around to help in any way that we can. I look forward to seeing you around the boards.

Abbie

i can't offer any advice about migraines but i don't feel like your dr is paying enuf attention to you. can a friend or family member go with you to your appt and be a strong advocate for you?

i'd get a 2nd opinion no matter what. i think an mri is a good idea just to rule out any problems. after that you might want to find a doc that specializes in headaches.

but, don't give up looking for answers. do computer searches or ask your pcp dr for referrals. you are your own best advocate. keep searching til someone takes you seriously.

Welcome to NT

This is a great place to come for support and information. Sometimes it's just good to know you're not alone.

There's tons of stuff to read through. Use the "SEARCH" button above to search for things.

yes do ask for a MRI. It is painless.

I've had migraines, to the point of no fun. We do understand. I'm not suffering with those any more. Thank God for that. They are terrible to deal with.

Being young is hard on you, because you are missing out on a lot of fun. not hardly fair at all. I do hope you get to enjoy some things, though.

Be thankful for the rest of your good health. Some younger than you are in a lot worse shape. Sometimes life includes suffering. a humbling experience one must admit.

I would suggest you keep a diary of your day, headache pain scale, weather, foods, sleep, stress, exercise, water intake, fun time. Over a few months you may realize some things trigger your migraine headaches.
