Default Hey there!! // L5 nerve pain that is unbearable in the side of my calf.. ?

I'm new to the neighborhood and wanted to say hello!

I had a discetomy a year ago, pain again a year later another MRI showed fragments. but it wasnt until a few month later that I started have this burning awful pain in the side of my calf just below my knee.. So pain in my glut but nothing compared to the pain just below my knee. it didnt start out a burning feeling but a knawing feeling ...then the burning that felt like I had a chemical burn, couldnt even touch it with a sheet. Have had one tranforaminal shot about 2 weeks ago. the burning pain is not there but I still have this horrible knawing pain along with hardly able to put pressure on my leg when I first wake up..

I understand this pain is from my L5 nerve being pinched but has anyone experience these weird sensations? the burning? I am on fentanyl patch and oxycodone for the pain. But the pain is still unbearable.. help?

Thanks
Nikki

Smile Hello and Welcome!

Hello Nikki and WELCOME to NeuroTalk!

Here are a couple of links to forums here at NT that may be of interest to you.

Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD and CRPS)

I'm no expert but your description of the burning sensation sounds, to me, like RSD which I have had for 8+ years. You can also find information about RSD at www.rsdsa.org

Please feel free to roam around and join in anywhere. Kick off your shoes, pull up a chair, and grab your favorite drink. You will find a large group of very kind, caring, and considerate people here who share a wealth of knowledge and understanding.

If you have any questions or need any assistance please don't hesitate to ask. Someone will always be around shortly to help in any way possible.

I look forward to seeing you around the board.

Abbie

Hi, welcome to NT

So sorry you're in so much pain. It's no fun.

I have had pain along the IT band and where you're describing at the outside calf below my knee. I do have L5 issues.

Concrete is the worst to cause my leg pain. I have used a TheraCane on those nasty trigger points. It does help. You don't have to be aggressive with it, just know how to work it. Here's a link for that:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...l_1yyw4lg45q_e

I also used Lidoderm 5% patches for that spot. Helped me tremendously. I hear the have Flector patches now that may be better. I didn't try those.

Of course, good posture and core strengthening, if you can, will help your back, hence maybe give your calf relief.

I also use the LED and infrared light therapy pads on my leg. Helped me tremendously.
Here's a link for that.

I also use an oversized tennis ball to work on those nasty trigger points.

I hope you find some relief soon.

There's lot's of ideas here.

When I tried things, I would grade them as a positive or a negative.

Never tried ice, but it could be an option.

Tale care...
