My son was diagnosed with post concussion syndrome. He is 16 years old. He plays high level ice hockey and a national travel team. He told me in december that he was depressed, had headaches everyday for months, felt suicidal, lost interest in life (except hockey). I was scared.

I talked to his guidance counselor at school who indicated that it sounded like a concussion. I got him an appt with a neuropsychologist who ran him through tests and diagnosted him with PCS. he stayed home from school for a week, and had another test, which was better. Since going back to school, he feels worse again. The doctor thinks, he might need to stay out of school for several weeks. His MRI and EEG came back ok.

Now he says he is fine. I think he's lying because he doesnt want to fail school by missing so much, and because he wants to play hockey again. I feel for him, but I'm not sure what to do. His coach thinks he's fine, and should play. His dad says I'm overdoing all this and making it complicated, he says he feels fine so let him go to school and play hockey. The doctors want to keep testing him for the next 2 months, with no hockey.

I don't know what to do. If he's out of school for so long, he may need to repeat this grade. If he's out of hockey too long, it could effect his ability to get into a junior league. If he goes to school too soon, it could make his recovery longer. If he plays too soon, he could get much worse, or die.

Has any hockey players experienced this?

Hi, I would like to make one suggestion about school. If he needs to be out medically. Your doctor can help with this. There is a 504. In all states its a ADA law, were he can do work at home when he is able. And can have a tutor hopefully for around 4 hours a week.
But there is also a Other Health Impairment for special education in many states, were a student is missing many days. And needs help, because of learning problems. He may qualify for this. I would talk to the school psychologist, and 504 coordinator as to how to get him some help too.

Please do not let him play hockey till you are positive, that he is okay.
And with his doctors saying at least 2 months, then I would say wait.

I have had a few concussions, and its hard to recover from them. Its also
easy to overdue. When you first start to think you are getting back to yourself.
