Default Hello from a Newbie

Hi everyone! I found this site and thought it might be a good place to read and talk about physical and mental problems. I don't have anything bad wrong with me...just a lot of small annoying things, including a nagging depression. I still feel the need to talk about my problems sometimes. I'm 65 and I know that I'm blessed to only have small things bothering me.

My biggest fear is Alzheimer's because both of my parents had confirmed cases of it. At age 65, forgetting things happens a lot..... even for people without the disease, but for me, forgetting something can be a real stressor. I look forward to meeting others with Alzheimer's in your family, as well as those who battle depression and anxiety.

Welcome to NeuroTalk....

There are two simple things that if you are having problems with, can be fixed easily and inexpensively.

I'd get tested for B12 and Vit D right away. Recommendations are for people 50 and over in US to take a B12 supplement anyway. But low B12 is very common, and getting tested a good idea. Don't accept "normal" or "fine" from the doctor either, as lab ranges in US are low... You should be at 400 at least or preferrably higher. Low B12 has been implicated in Alzheimer's too.

Vit D also is necessary to keep your immune system working well. New guidelines are for at least 50 (US units).

If you are low in either... fixing them often helps with many issues.

I have a B12 thread here:
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread85103.html
Some drugs like metformin, hormones, and OTC acid blocking drugs as well as RX ones lead to low B12 levels.

Smile Hello Blackcat!

Welcome to NT!

This is a perfect place to share your feelings and concerns. There is so much support and understanding here and everybody is very down-to-earth. I too battle depression/anxiety, and it really helps to talk about it, even if some things seem small and insignificant.....they all add up to one big stressor. It's just good to know that we are not alone.
