Hello. My 13-year-old daughter was hit by a car on Sunday, March 16. She was discharged from the hospital this past Thursday. She was diagnosed with right SAH, left SAH, temporal bone fracture, right frontal lobe contusion, TBI with BLOC, and lactic acidosis. I have no idea how lactic acidosis comes into the picture.
I'm just trying to find resources so that I can know how to cope with the whole thing...her recovery, problems that might come up, and the trauma. I don't know what to expect. She is obviously very traumatized and has regressed. I'm still pretty scared and traumatized myself. She has her first followup next Wednesday and it will be determined when she can return to school. That will be a huge step. She's in a quiet, controlled environment right now, but as the doctor told me, school is a different story. There will be a lot of noise and distractions and that will be when we know how she will react and how deeply she has been affected...physically. If there are forums for parents of children with TBI, can someone share them with me? I really appreciate any information. I don't have time to look around and read much on this site right now but wanted to post. Thanks, Ziora |

Thank you for the replies. I'm trying to learn to navigate this forum. It's a little confusing because my posts don't seem to show up right away, so I double posted my introduction. Sorry about that.

Hi. My 13-year-old daughter was hit by a car last week. She is home from the hospital now. I'm looking for resources to help us as she recovers from her brain injury. It's a scary time but she is recovering by leaps and bounds. Any links or suggestions of any kind are welcome.

Hi Ziora,
I am sorry to hear of your daughter's brain injury. I had an Aquired Brain Injury, colloid cyst of the third ventricle (benign brain tumor) removed Nov 2000. I underwent emergency neurosurgery to remove the tumor, and had extensive rehabilitation afterwards. I was a patient on a brain injury unit at a local rehab hospital where I relearned to talk and organize my thoughts so I could have some ability to remember. I had a lot of help and support from my local Brain Injury Association. Every state has one. (number should be in your phonebook) Rehabilitation is key. Your daughter is very young. The brain has a wonderful way of "re-wiring" thus allowing for new learning. Please search the net for Brain Injury resources. There are many available. Best wishes for healing for your daughter, Dodi |
