Hope I'm not boring anyone with my stories. I'm enjoying telling them partly because I'm bored and partly it's giving my fingers a little exercise.
After spending 3-4 days in ICU, I was transferred to a regular floor. It was heaven. They finally got me cleaned up and smelling pretty. Nothing like a bed bath to make one feel like a million bucks. I was to spend a week on this floor until I was again transferred to another hospital for in-patient rehab. A couple of days before the transfer I had to get a routine Dopler. One thing I should add is when your spinal cord is used as a play toy, there are usually side effects. At this time my legs were extremely hypersensitive. A butterfly could have landed on them and the pain would have launched me into low earth orbit. So I'm wheeled down to ultrasound to have the test. It was pure agony having that wand doohickey thing running over my legs. But the test showed I did have a blood clot in my right femoral. Poop. The next day I was once again headed to surgery to have a filter inserted into an artery to stop the clot from going to my lungs, heart, brain, wherever if it decided to break loose. No anesthesia was used except a local. With my legs being hypersensitive, the procedure was almost beyond bearable. Anyways, after all was said and done, I was wheeled back to my room. For those who do not know, when one gets a filter they must lay flat on their backs for 8 or 12 hours (I can't remember the exact length). I was brought back to my room during dinner time. The food service worker brought in my tray, set it on the bed table, removed the covering and left. I'm laying there thinking how the heck am I suppose to eat when I can't sit up. But I'm a trooper and gave it a shot. I should now mention the main course was beef stew. I challenge anyone to eat beef stew laying flat on their backs. A few minutes pass and a nurse comes in to see how I'm doing. Well apparently I wasn't getting as much of the stew into my mouth as I thought I was. The nurse was just laughing her butt off as she was cleaning me up. She asked if I wanted to try pepperoni pizza instead. As it turned out the pizza was much easier to eat. |
