Default Post operation depression

My mother had a valve replacement a month ago. She is battling with severe depression after the operation. How can I help her.

Hi Michelle,

Post surgery depression is very common. This should be reported to her DR maybe not carido but her G.P. Have you asked her why ? Just letting her talk alot to family and friends keeping close contact may help more than you even think. Try to engage her in fun activites she use to like to do. Just her being in the state of trying to recovery physcially and then add other life stress to that--- can easily lead her into depression. Being it also was heart surgery its scary --many people start to question there own mortality. She may have combo of post traumatic stress disorder as well as depression. She really needs to be seen and talk to her G.P they might be able to put her on meds to help adjust her serotonin levels. Best of luck and im very glad you seeking out help for your mom.

Hi there, My name is Melody. Your mom is so lucky to have such a caring and compassionate daughter. Is she computer friendly? perhaps she might like to come here and post and make new friends? If she's not, then you have been given very good advice. She's questioning her own mortality. We often think we are immortal and then life hands you a lesson and you go on from there. Perhaps, if she is a spiritual person, she might find consolation from a member of your faith?. That can do wonders. I've seen people go from being suicidal to having a real meaning to their lives.

I hope she has support other than you. But if not, she's got the best there is.

Your a good daughter hon

All the best, Melody

It was fairly well known when all the articles were geared toward men and heart disease that they could have depression after heart surgery even up to 6 mo. out. So I would guess the same was true for women, but I can't say for sure. I agree with all the others who have said to report this to here pcp (primary care physician) and get his advice. I haven't had heart surgery but have had several major surgeries and have always had some depression afterwards. It was always difficult but eventually faded (the one time forgetting was welcome)! Good luck.
