Hello my name is sharon I was told a year ago that I have neuropathy my doctor has told me thru many blood tests that my b12 levels are doubled than normal she says the vitamins basically are stored in my body and do nothing for me.I have been to a neurologist as well.So how weird is this? she does not want me getting more b 12 so now I have the pins and needles and the numbness and some times intense heat thru out my body.So how can I be storing too much b 12????

Welcome to NeuroTalk:

Can we start with this?

Do you know your blood level, now? You can get the numbers from your doctor's office.

Did you have testing while using injections or oral tablets?
Did you stop the B12 days before the test?

Did you have MMA test and/or homocysteine?

Why are you using B12, and how much, and what type, cyano or methyl? Injections or tablets?

In order to answer your question, there are things that I need to know.

What type of doctor?

Lab ranges in US are outdated and go very low, and that has changed but not every doctor follows the new protocols.
If your level was 400, and your doctor thought that was double 200, you would be in a bad place.

The new cut off today is 400pg/ml.

Here is a new video on YouTube, you might find interesting.

Question

I cannot imagine getting too many vitamins from salads. (there is no B12 in vegetables BTW... only animal sourced foods.)

B12 is stored in the liver, for some time, up to 5 yrs worth.
This is because when humans were hunter gatherers, meat would become scarce, and since B12 is so critical for life, we'd die if no food was available at times.

There is really no upper limit of toxicity for B12 set by the FDA or experts. In fact experts recommend higher levels for people with symptoms.

Dr. C. Snow in this paper:
http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/post698522-70.html
and also in that video I posted above.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/41...limits-safety/

Many people with neurological symptoms never show anemia.
This is discussed by the doctors in the video I posted to you.
Just because your anemia is better, is no reason to stop the B12.

Do some homework of your own, and decide for yourself.
MethylB12 the active form, is over the counter and you can do it yourself if you decide to. You only need the doctor for testing.

Many doctors have no idea about nutritional supplements and how to use them. Sometimes you need to do some homework yourself.

Most of our PN posters here, keep their levels at or above 1000pg/ml.

In your posts, you mention vitamins--- but only go into detail about B12. Are there other vitamins at issue here?

How interesting.

You remind me of my doctor who said I could not be b12 deficient because I was not a vegetarian.

Another doctor told me I should be on Prozac for life... and that he wouldn't recommend more B12 for me than a shot a month.

When I went to a holistic doctor she wrote me a prescription for enough cyanocobalamin to give myself a shot a day. I was sure she'd made a math error. But, when I began to use that much peripheral neuropathy I'd had for years, and with other doctors had told me was permanent, get used to it, went away.

Luckily a neurologist I went to told me to keep a time line. That helped me see what symptoms went away after shots, and how long that took.

Now I use sublinguals. So SO much easier.

And, I gave up GMO food which appears to have lowered how much B12 I need to use. I guess the pesticide built into GMOs was killing the good bacteria related to B12.

If I were you, I'd start keeping a time line, and see what happens... People are not the same. Your doctor may have someone else in mind... lol

Cool Smirk High B12

Just wanted to touch upon the topic of B12 being too high. Mine runs about 1550. I have asked two specialists if it will hurt me if it's too high and I was told no by both. However, they did tell me to cut back on my B12 since it is of no benefit to have it that high.

Hi, you had a doctor tell you that you should cut back on B-12 because there is no benefit? I can tell you that there is indeed a benefit.

I take 5000 every single morning sublingually. I take Methyl B-12. I was diagnosed with neuropathy 7 years ago. That was when I began taking the Methyl B-12. BEST THING I EVER DID. I have no neuropathy symptoms since doing this.

I also do not eat any processed foods. I watch my diabetes like a hawk and I take care of myself. I grow my own sprouts and microgreens in my living room and it's the best thing I have ever done. My B-12 number is 1600. That was last month.

My doctor (thank god) knows all about what I do and what I take. He's all for it.

And are you taking B-6? That can cause or make neuropathy worse.

Melody

I cannot imagine a doctor today telling people to not eat veggies and salads... this sounds basically "crazy".

B12 is stored for a "rainy day" in the liver. Some retinol Vit A is also stored. But veggies provide A in betacarotene form which is not toxic in any way and is converted to Vit A as needed by the liver. Almost all other vitamins are excreted when in excess. In fact some B12 is also excreted daily in the bile.

I would demand your doctor give you details, and information you could independently look up yourself.

It is prudent to avoid iron if you don't need it. That is the only thing--and it is a mineral not a vitamin-- to watch out for.

It might be time to find another doctor...think about that.

Here is a website that tells what is in your food:
http://nutritiondata.self.com/

Here is what is in 8oz of V8 juice for example:
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/...oducts/10449/2

This is what is in one inner leaf of lettuce:
http://nutritiondata.self.com/facts/...roducts/2477/2

Not many vitamins in that one!
