Confused New in need of answers

Hello everyone, i'm a 59yr old that was rear ended 2yrs ago. It's been downhill ever since I was treated for whiplash i told doctor there is something wrong with back of my neck..tried to return to work a few times.

Finaly after 6months and getting worse my doctor sends me for xrays, it shows that my neck curveture is backwards. MRI & Cat scans show my neck is a mess and full of arthritis. OK i've had osteo & rhumetoid arthritis for the last 10 and my meds work fine..no problems with flare up or nothing.

I was reffered to a specialist...he says he can fuse my neck, but he is more worried about the shrinkage of my cerebelum??? (i've never been a heavy drinker) I've develop this uncontrol movement and what i call tourette movement only in the last month after taking a anti inflamatory for my neck. I also have this swelling that occurs left side of neck to just below my adam apple per say, specialist says it may be goiter. This new swelling comes and goes and it's like i'm being choked.

I just need a place where maybe i can find some answers before my next visit to another specialist .

Sorry i was so long winded.

Welcome to NT

this is a great place to find support and answers

Don't worry about length or spelling/ typing errors. We get it...

Hubby had a major fall nd broke his C0-1-2 vertebrae and had a stroke in his right cerebellum. His affected his vision pretty badly. he is in visual rehab therapy. He had a distinct swelling at the Adam's apple area. They tried to tell me it was a goiter. That was BS. He did have choking episodes, so be careful and take heed. your body knows something is not right. It was the stroke effect for him, Undiagnosed.

Have you had a CT of your brain? It could tell you what it is or what it's not.

Keeping a journal may be helpful in the months ahead. Keep as much info in it as you can. Telephone numbers, calls, names of people you speak with, activities, foods, meds, pain levels, sleep patterns, etc...

Hope you find things here to help you along. It won't always be this way.

Take care....

Thanks for the warm welcome. I know it will take me some time to find my way around the site.
I have a appointment today with my family doctor...I don't think he will like me too much after today... I had a cat scan done in May 2012 & a MRI June2012 My family doctor refered me to a Neurosurgeon as non urgent. It took 11 months for me to see him...I saw him last week grrr. He told me that he could do a neck fusion to help my neck pain, but what he saw was that my cerebelum was shrinking and he thinks i may have a goiter that needs to be dealt with. There was nothing mention scan reports about this. I know the cerebelum controls motor control.. These signs which i call my tourettes symptoms only started about 1month ago. Mind you i have been trying to take very good care of myself. When my head would get too heavy for my shoulders i would lay down and stretch my neck until the pressure was off.
This may not be caused by the accident but it sure heck started the ball rolling on everything. WoW when they say in a blink of an eye your life changes Yup sure does...
Again thanks for listening

HI kountrylady,

I wonder if the cerebellar skrinkage is not from a thyroid problem since u mentioned the goiter. I know it can cause this to occur. Im also neck fusion patient had it done in 2010 c4 thru c7. I would always try to get 2-3 consults before this surgery. I also would suggest if you get copies of your MRI or scans some people chose to post them on the spinal forum here --just for feedback. Im sorry that your in pain right now. Please feel free to post any ? you may have in regards to fusion surgery. I wish all the best of luck and hope the --DOC'S-- get to the bottom of this so you can begin to heal.

Could you please take the report of your MRI and post it in the Spinal disorders forum? We can better talk there -- I'd like to see the report, if I may. I can better advise you if I can see it. Plus that's where we should be talking about this anyway. LOL

So I hope to see you there with your MRI report. Talk soon. Hugs, Lee

Our TOS forum if you would like to read about it - many drs are not fully up on the condition, so some self education is needed to then seek out good care if it applies.

Confused in Canada

The bolded parts may be thoracic outlet related (TOS) , if your MRI doesn't show any major issues that would be the cause of all your symptoms.

previous whiplash - w/increasing pain could be a factor for TOS
new swelling comes and goes and it's like i'm being choked - Have you been to any advanced PT people for full evaluation?
I had this feeling when my top ribs had got stuck in a raised position, due to severe neck muscle spasms. Good PT can do rib mobilizations to drop those , if it is not a goiter.
