My son developed a bilateral squint with a sudden onset on boxing day 2012 after over a week of diarrhoea from a gastro bug. He was 20 months at the time. We took him to the doctor who referred us straight away to opthlamology at the hospital. After seeing an orthorp and an opthamologist it was decided that he didn't have any problems with his vision and we were sent to paeds where he underwent an mri and a lumbar puncture both of which were clear and he was diagnosed with a 6th nerve palsy which we were told should recover fully within months.

He seemed to be improving slowly. One of the eyes was pretty much straight again until we had another gastro bug in the april and he seemed to go straight back to how he was in December. Since then both eyes have waxed and wained. Tend to be really good for a couple of days and then go bad again for weeks and then really good for a couple of days again and a lot does seem to depend on his general health being good.

When we came to go for the opthlamology check we were told that he doesn't have a palsy it is just a squint which would need glasses and patching. We then asked for a second opinion and saw an awful doctor at Alder Hey who agreed with his colleague (who is also a pal) he had no notes other than her referral letter.

We then went to see a chosen doctor privately who was fantastic with my son and is really keen to get him sorted. However, he still is under the same impression as his colleagues and we are following his instructions to improve his vision.

It has only recently come to light that the full tests were done on his eyes at the very first consultation and that there was absolutely no problem with them other than the bilateral squint.

From the very first consult with the neurologist Myasthenia has been playing on my mind and I have asked to have him tested but everyone insists that as there is no ptosis that it isn't mg but mother nature wont stop nagging me. Does anyone else think it could be ocular mg? Another is recurrent 6th nerve palsy?
