Sounds like an AFO, ankle foot orthotic. These can be helpful. They do keep you from working the peroneal muscles as much so will contribute to atrophy. Of course if you already can't work those muscles...

Foot Drop

Hi Ken, I am waiting on the arrival of a afo foot device called a 'smart step'. Hopefully it does the job. ken, were you able to drive?

Also I have ordered a ems unit - my current tens machine is probably a $5 job out of China!

Kitt 06-21-2015 04:01 PM

Not Ken but this might explain the device you are getting. And according to the information, yes you can drive with it. It allows for plantarflexion which is needed to push the gas pedal.

Also, this from You Tube.

Apparently they are just for foot drop and not for the troubles some of us have which do contribute to atrophy, etc.

How do sensations change as nerves regenerate?

I am just wondering if anyone is able to tell me how sensations change as nerves regenerate?

Kitt 06-22-2015 08:46 AM

I cannot because a CMTers nerves do not regenerate at least not with the type I have. Maybe, just maybe with another type. Not certain. I'm sure someone else might be able to help you.

Smart Step - AFO

I received my AFO yesterday. Everyone at work has commented that I am walking a lot better. I am not sure I like it though as it is quite bulky at the back and will only Fi in limited shoes (eg sports shoes - lucky I wear them a lot!!)

Skiing with Foot Drop

I am flying to NZ next week for a skiing holiday with my family. It will be interesting!! My theory is my ankle is locked in anyway, and shouldn't have to dorsi-flex if I take it easy.

Good luck with that!

Have a safe trip. :)
