Default New Here - Chronic Pain & Fatigue

My troubles all started May 25, 2013, during Memorial weekend. We all were camping and riding our ATV’s and dirtbikes. I ended up losing control of my ATV, going around a corner, flying off a 30+ foot embankment, hitting a tree in mid-air, and getting thrown off my quad into a creek below. I knew something bad had happened once I came to; seeing my leg in the opposite direction.

I was rushed by ambulance and sent off for emergency surgery. Being in the hospital for almost 4 days I was finally discharged, but 3 days later rushed back by ambulance for a severe infection from the surgery… another stay of 3 days.

During the course of 18 months I had 3 surgeries. I was so fatigued and still dealing with chronic pain. Today, marks my 2 years since my accident, and I’m in awful pain with fatigue; which is effecting my daily work/personal life greatly.

I’m currently being seen by my doctor and trying all sorts of things, but each day it seems to get worse and worse! I want to be normal, and not hurt! I was extremely active before all this and now all I do is sleep when I’m not working!

I figured I would sign up and have a place where there are other’s going through similar situations, and hoping for some advice/help?

You've really been thru a lot of damage to the joints. These can take a long time to do more healing etc. I take a lot of supps for joint support, and my broken bone issues have been from a hip replacement mess in 2010....they do break bones and do a lot of carpentry work with these surgeries. Mine was elective. Hope never again. How are you doing these days?

Hi,

Nice to meet you and welcome to NT. Wow, that was some break. That sure explains the chronic pain.

The fatigue ? ....... Well, that could be from all kinds of things. Do you feel that it is related to your injury and surgeries? It may be unrelated.

I live with severe and chronic fatigue. We (docs and me) have not discovered the culprit for the fatigue but have several things that may be factors. Fatigue is a possible side-effect of several of the meds I take but they are not meds that I can discontinue even if they are a factor so it is hard to tell if or how much they are contributing to my fatigue.

I also have several other (chronic) health conditions that have fatigue involved but can't definitively say they are the source or a contributing factor either as they can't be eliminated.

I do know that chronic pain can cause depression to varying degrees and depression can cause fatigue so that can also be a contributing factor.

What testing have you had regarding your fatigue?

Is your chronic pain directly related to your injury and will that be forever? Have they fixed it the best it can be?

Forgive me, it is late and my brain has shut down. I guess I should have waited until tomorrow to respond when my mind is functioning. Sorry. That is assuming it will function any better when I get up tomorrow.

Wishing you better days and look forward to seeing future posts from you.

So sorry about the delay in coming back. Fatigue was noted after accident, but also continued to deal with it, as I had one surgery on top of another. Now it's essentially been 1 year since my last surgery and it's awful! My doctor mentioned when your body is hurting day-in, and day-out, your body ends up becoming fatigued from dealing with the pain.

Testing - working with my PCP (doc), I have seen a neurologist which I've had a bone scan and will be going in for a nerve conduction test. I will hear my results tomorrow, and let you guys know.

I can post the images and the report from the radiologist, just don't know what they mean yet.

"Tests: (1) NM BONE 3 PHASE (NM-3) (9794696)
NUCLEAR NOS "Result Below..."
RESULT: NM BONE 3 PHASE (NM-3)
NM BONE 3 PHASE (NM-3) NM-3

IMPRESSION:
1. Abnormal delayed uptake seen in the mid distal tibia and fibula
favored to be secondary to patient's reported history of trauma.
Please compare with any outside unavailable plain films of this
region.
2. Visualized left lower extremity is normal.

RADIOPHARM: 99mTc HDP 27 mCi IV.

INDICATION: Chronic right leg pain following tibia and fibular
fracture

COMPARISON: None

PROCEDURE AND FINDINGS: Angiographic and blood pool imaging
demonstrates no significant asymmetric uptake.

Delayed imaging demonstrates mild increased uptake involving the mid
distal tibia and more focal uptake in the mid distal fibula. This is
likely related to patient's reported history of fracture in this
region.

No abnormal radiotracer uptake seen at the level of the knees or in
the left lower extremity on submitted images."

Hi again Becca. Gosh that was a nasty break.

Just curious, but has anyone explained to you why your broken tibia is darker on the latest images? Is that because of vascular issues due to the breaks or is a rod in place?
