Hi grannytwoshoes

Welcome to NT.

Sounds like you may be experiencing what are known as auditory hallucinations (actually the most common form of hallucination). There are a number of possible causes ranging from neurological to side effects from medications, age related illness etc.

While they can be worrying at first if you can figure out that they aren't likely to be of any danger to yourself or anyone else it makes it easier to accept that they are just an anomaly in your life. If they are causing you serious concern or making you do risky things - like leaving your front door open at night - then definitely get the doctor to check it out. It would help to keep a journal of when they occur and any other symptoms that may happen at the same time. eg numbness around the ear area.

The jerking in the hands could be a sign of anxiety or nerve damage.

Hi grannietwoshoes

Thanks for the info about the Gabapentin. It's likely that this is what is causing the auditory hallucinations. It also sounds like what started as carpal tunnel syndrome may have progressed to body wide Peripheral Neuropathy, if you're getting shooting pains all over. This is something a neurologist can assess.

I''ll add a link to a drug safety data sheet for Gabapentin here.

http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/profs/dat...ntincaptab.pdf

Hallucinations as a side effect are mentioned on page 17. You may also want to read the paragraph about reduced dosage for people over 65 who may have impaired kidney function - page 3. (Not sure if this applies to you but it may be something to ask your doctor about for the future).

Given that you need the gabapentin to manage the pain sometimes it's accepting there is a trade-off in terms of side effects. I also sometimes hear sounds that aren't there. They started soon after a hospital admission for adrenal failure and I was put on cortico-steroids. Not sure exactly if it's the medication or the condition that's causing it but as the condition is incurable and the medication is for life I had to accept the auditory hallucinations for what they were. Fortunately in my case they're harmless - just sometimes annoying - and as far as side effects go I've had worse.

Hope your doctor agrees to review your medication and as St George says a referral to a neuro is a good idea. Please let us know how you get on and feel free to ask any more questions. If you haven't already found the Peripheral Neuropathy forum on NT its at:

Hi

Dehydration may cause it too. It seems I can't skip meals or skip on drinking throughout the day as I used to. Electrolytes like coconut water, vitamin water, or v8 are really good to hydrate. Water sometimes isn't enough.

Take care
