Default Can a head knock improve throught processing

Hi everyone,

I wanted to ask foryour thoughts on something that happened to me recently and see what you think becasue its really making me feel very wierd.

A few weeks ago i hit my head on the pavement after falling off my skateboard (by the way, i am 47 years old, just a kid to a 90 year old). Anyways, i smashed my left eye pretty badly and have a decent scar over my eye and i did have a big egg under my eye......i didnt go to hospital (probably a stupid thing).

I will add here that i have a very good job in a highly paid and skilled profession, so i am not a dummy.

Where i am going with this is that after i hit my head, it feels like i became more intelligent in problem solving and general writing and communicating.

It even feels wierd telling you that.

I want to know if its possible that a head knock...........hang on, let me clarify.

When i hit my head i think i got knocked out for a brief time because all i rememeber was lying on my back and feeling sleepy and tired and then people beng around me. For the first two weeks after i had the accident i had trouble concentrating and what not but since then it feels like my intelligence has vastly improved. Answers just seem to pop into my head and i can solve things really easily.

I am not claiming genius, no way, but some thing has happed that is making everything seem clearer and solutions to problems (especially at work) are just poppinmg to my head.

Am i going nuts? - i sat in the toilet this week and these yellow and orange colour appeared as if out of no where.

Man i am losing it, can someone please tell me if there are cases like what i am experiencing.

Even my typing as i write this post if fluent and the words are just rolling out - it seems so easy.

I have not told another soul about what is goig on so, what do you think?

Hi James James

Welcome to NeuroTalk .

What you have described is a new one on me.

You could post about your experiences in the "Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Concussion Syndrome" NT forum.

Although members there are largely focused on adverse effects of concussion and similar, some of them might have insights and suggestions to offer you.

All the best.

Hi, James James. I guess anything is possible with our brains. I suggest you talk to a doctor about it. It would be quite a breakthrough (no pun intended) if a jolt to a specific part of the brain could improve thought processing. It's usually the opposite!

Any way you could take some brain "tests"?

Hello James: Welcome to NeuroTalk! I'm afraid I can't really address your concerns. I'm nowhere near 90 yet. But I am an older person. My head has taken a beating over the years. (I'll spare you the details.) I haven't experienced anything like this. (I almost wish I had. I just seem to get dumber as the years go by.)

One thing I have had, which I think may have been the result of some of the damage I've done to my head, is that I had a detached retina in one eye. I can't say for certain that the two things were related. But it is my belief that they were. Given your experience of seeing orange & yellow colors appearing out of nowhere, it might be worth having your eyes checked out by an ophthalmologist.

Hi James,
Welcome to Neuro Talk! The colors that you saw are do to the optical lobe
in the back of your head where your eye sight is. My advice to you is to get a MRI done or a CT scan to be sure there's no damage in the area of your head
where you fell. Also take note if certain lighting doesn't bother you if it does that means you may be photosensitive. I found I was photosensitive after having a e.e.g. (brainwave) test done and they flashed different color strobe lights one at a time. I wish you the best of luck and May God Bless You!

Default Take a Mental Status Exam

It seems unlikely that a knock to the head would increase your intelligence, but it might make you *feel* more intelligent. To get a less subjective appraisal of your intelligence, you might want to take an IQ test or even something like the Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE). Some people feel more intelligent when they are on certain kinds of drugs, but are they really? A knock on the head might have a similar effect.
