Default VP shunt removal

Hi all.
A VP shunt was inserted about 20 years ago because I had a Arachnoid cyst. In February this year the just replaced the pipe because it had been semi blocked for about a year. From February till about two days ago I just kept on having infections and issues with the new pipe. I also have multiple sclerosis which means I have a weakened immune system. I also developed secondary intercranial hypertension from steroid treatment they had given me in February. On the 07 July doctors decided to remove everything, my shunt and pipe. I really don’t feel well and have pressure headaches because I had the shunt in for 20 years could this just be my body adjusting to not having one anymore? How long is the recovery and symptoms of having a VP shunt removed?

Hi AlexiaK,

Welcome!

I'm sorry I'm not able to say anything helpful about your shunt question but I see you mention having MS.

There is an MS forum here, and I hope you'll check it out.

I have MS too (diagnosed in 1980) and try to answer people's questions when I can.

Hi Alexiak,
Welcome to NeuroTalk.

Check out the
Hydrocephalus Forum

If you go to hydrocephalus forum and look under the page numbers on right hand side towards top of forum there are two tabs. One is Forum Tools and the other is Search this Forum.

If you type in keywords to Search this Forum and check the Show Posts button and click Go, you will bring up older threads with people asking similar questions. I used the keywords "VP Shunt Removal" and that brought up many older threads.

I'm very sorry that you're dealing with so much since the shunt removal last week. I hope you can find some answers in some of the older posts there. That forum is not very busy these days, but if you repost you may find that someone will answer who has experience.

take care there.
