I was commenced on Gabapentin for mild neuropathic pain in my neck - 900mg
5 years ago. As the pain was gone, I unwisely started to reduce this drug without telling my Dr I reduced 300mg - bad move.
I struggled with appalling side effects.
Cognitive, Delirium, confusion, Sever sleep disturbance, balance issues, muscle weakness, gastric and visual disturbance, Profound nausea and dizziness and more. I become totally dis functional. My suffering was so intense I didn't want to go on living. With tests and scans Drs couldn't diagnose what was wrong, and I could not work.

A Dr in Australia guessed it was Gabapentin withdrawal - yes he was right.
I'm improving now.

I'm still reducing the Gabapentin at 50mg over 6 week blocks. it will take a long time, I still have lessened withdrawals, but are better tolerated. The worst effects last 10 days.
On another site I found Gabapentin is safely water soluble, so I dissolve the 100mg dose and half it. Others I know take even lower doses this way.
I do know this is very individual, as some people report they don't have terrible withdrawal effects.

My GP and pain specialist who prescribed Gabapentin are unaware or not interested in the withdrawal effects, quite dismissive.

Many specialists and Drs Don't seem to be aware of the severe side effects some people can have changing these medications.

Pfizer who produce Gabapentin do not give this information either.

Sorry for the long post, I hope this book can help people or families as many do suffer from withdrawing/ stopping these drugs, even under medical supervision.

Mark Horowitz has also written a book for parents raising special needs children.
