Default Son with Seizures

My 12 year-old son, Max has been suffering from seizures for almost 2 years. We started by going the traditional medical route - e.g., EEGs, MRIs, hospitalization with VideoEEG. Although he was diagnosed with Epilepsy, no cause was found. His neurologist prescribed Trileptal but increasing doses did not stop the seizures. Max experienced side effects, which made concentration and memory tasks more difficult. Doing my own research and carefully observing Max, I learned that excitotoxins (e.g., Aspartame and MSG) contributed to his seizures. After allergy testing, we gradually eliminated all processed foods, artificial colors and flavors, dairy, gluten, yeast, corn, and soy. These foods have a high glutamate content. It's been very tough on Max but we have been able to decrease his seizures while decreasing his meds. With the aid of a complimentary physician Max takes a plethora of vitamins and minerals, which are known to be anti-seizure agents. However, the seizures are not gone and I'm looking for a neurologist (or other medical expert) who recognizes the impact of diet on seizures. We live in the New York metropolitan area. Can anyone help?

HI Eileen

I am very amazed and pleased that you have had such luck with your eliminations.

I have a 16 year old that has the VNS and is on 3 medications. He doesn't
seem to have any reductions with any type of different diet.

I don't know the doctors in New York. And I don't know if we have any
parents in the epilepsy area, or adults that can help here.

OR even in the child health area. But please check those two out.

Also have you gone to the Epilepsy FOundation of America site. THere
are many parents that do lots of researching there, all over the world
that might know doctor's that can help you.

I'm alld'smomma there.

Hello and welcome to NeuroTalk. Great to see you have come to be with us. You will find a great number of caring, supporting members here willing to help each other as they can.

I have had epilepsy since I was ten and have been on all different meds. I have a VNS also, I have been able to reduce some of my medicine. Although I am not completely controlled When I have a speel it is much easilier on me. I have never had good luk with the diets. Then again what works for one may not work for all.

Here is the link to epilepsy there are many people there they will help out.
